What will our Century be remembered for?Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
It is the year 3013. (one thousand years in the future)
The Earth is green and healthy. Global population is down around two billion. Museums are everywhere, even some towns have been converted into them depicting early settlements to industrial boom to artistic synthesis we can only imagine. You can live in them and role play ages gone by. What do you see when you find the ones depicting 2013?

My first thought was Bic lighters.

If I look back to 1013...nothing jumps out to me as to what defines that year. I believe whatever or whoever is here in 3013 wouldn't give much thought to "Us" here in 2013.

2013 will be just one point in the distant past ...just as 1013 is to us.

We're still very early into the 21st century. The exponential growth of technology has been astounding so far.

1,000 years ago hmm. First ya have to imagine a place restored so you could role play there. What would jump out at ya?

That's a toughie. The US wasn't discovered yet. ...thinking...

A century that started in war despite the prospects of a beginning of a peaceful millenium (let alone at least a century or even a decade). Despite technology, Humanity still cannot even agree on terms of even religion, politics, or even human rights anymore. I would have to say that, if the way things are now keep going, they would more likely think that 2013 never even existed, just as much as any other person in America (let alone the world) would bother to remember what it was like in 1013. 1013 was really around the time the dark ages started in Europe. By then, Christianity had no longer become an enemy of the state, but established as two popular religions, Catholicism and Orthodoxism. For the last 400 years or so, Islam is also a prominent player in the world now, a major religion spreading from East to West. At this point, it is not even remembered as a specific year but a time span of about 400 or 500 years, in which case this is dictated as the low, high, and late periods of the dark/medieval ages. In this case, science, philosophy, technology, thinking, and even rights and freedoms were not even considered an option at this point. Religion was the ruling factor, next to primitive politics and feifdoms of kingdoms from cultural roots, after the recent fall of room almost around 700 years before. This can also be considered a technical starting point of the wars between Christendom and Islam, and the Jews being stuck in the middle.
Naturally, it is called the Dark Ages, simply because progress, enlightenment, freedom, human rights, and all other forms of constitutional representation, government implementation, and religious freedom and ad hoc tolerance were non-existant (even stamped down at some points, because the Catholic Church was ignorant, stupid, and often than not power hungry to the obsessive point of ruling the day-to-day lives of the common peasantry).

If anyone's even around in that imaginary far-off mist-shrouded cotton-candy FutureWorld, I hope they remember the only accurate prediction about the transfigurational quality of the 'life' they find themselves living was made in the movie 'Blade Runner'. They'll be amazed we got it so right while they watch our second-best filmic predictor, 'Escape From New York' ...

OP ... pointing out that 3013 is 1,000 years from now is so condescending ...

These are what people in 3013 will know about life on the planet in 2013:

- on-off switch on vibrators (in 3 there will be only an "on" switch)
- manual hand jobs
- man-made jokes
- singing voices that travel at the speed of sound
- zebra crossings
- seventeen presidents of the USA were assassinated in the third quarter, up 47% from the second quarter
- Luigi Mariano's run average will be beaten by a kalevala-playing Finn filmstar in a German-French co-production
- Egyptians mummies were a thousand years younger than then
- There was a tsunami-related earthquake that caused a huge hurricane season to flood and burn the area with meteorite showers and bad reflux medication all over the nation
- the great sewing machine rebellion in Pakistan
- the march of Pilipina Nannies to the capitol in the capital
- abolishing the capitol punishment, as it was replaced by the decapitation of congressional representatives
- fungi epidemic between toes

Our silly clothes.

What do you mentally picture when you think of Julius Caesar?
Or Queen Elizabeth?
Or any of the Pharaohs?

What do you see when you find the ones depicting 2013?

People holding small, rectangular objects, staring into them intently; many have long thin cords that attach them to these objects by their ears. The intensity of their focus suggests they are listening to/communicating with their spiritual leader. Some people appear to be stroking or patting the objects, usually with their thumbs, in some sort of religious ecstasy.

It will be remembered as the century when religious ignorance gave way to Reason, and all the pastors, parsons, ministers, witch doctors, shamans and priests had to go out and get real jobs making real contributions to civilization....

I suspect by then Earth will just be one of several human-inhabited planets. Most likely, people on the other planets will have little interest in what was going on way back then on the original planet. Earth will just be another place they trade with, share technology with and perhaps vacation on.

I'd say we'd remember 2013 was when people came in different... colors. And races ... And cultures

I figure by 3013 humanity should be so homogenized that we'll all be the same color. And, hopefully we'd take the best from each culture and use it to improve humanity as a whole.

The century? Think of 1913....no Russian Revolution, No Mao, WW1,WW2. Cold War, Nuclear energy, antibiotics, space flight, tv, computers. In 1913 the 'big stuff' in the century was yet to come

Who knows what this century will be remembered for.

The years 1613? 513?

In all honesty, I can confidently say that this century will be remembered for having it all backwards; material goods were meant to be used, and people were meant to be loved, but we've achieved quite the opposite...
