what was the main mode of transport in the wild west era?Page 1 of 1
You need to be more specific with your questions, in order to get useful answers.

Assuming that by "Wild West Era, " you are referring to the last quarter of the 19th century, in the general region of North America west of the Mississippi River, you still need to specify WHICH peoples you are talking about (European descendants? Indigenous peoples? ), WHERE they were travelling to and from (across the country east to west? North to south? East coast to California? ), and WHY they were travelling, and exactly WHEN (before, or after the Railroads were completed?).

Good question, as it was first by wagon trains [stage coach] which started from St Louis,Mo. as it was called the Gateway city to the West, also river routes, and trains later when steam came in later.

Also many sailed around the horn of South America and got there that way to California and the Pacific Northwest.

Lewis and Clark were the first commissioned to document their trek to find a way to the Northwest Passage.

As with business imo it was mostly the lust to find your fortune in gold in 1849 and the adventure in finding a new way of life to live with opportunity abound.

And much later doing the early advent of the automobile age, it was Route 66, starting from Chicago, Illinois to Southern California in finding your new home out West.

And in the last 65 years it was the Marines,Navy, Army etc etc returning from the Pacific during WW 11 as the new influx of people to live there next.

The "Wild West," and transportation during the time of the rail road. Hmmm, being a native New Mexican. We have a saying here, "the people went from horse back to cars overnight....prime example are the low rider car decor came from the time of western Spanishmen decking out there horses in silver". Horses were used up until the 1950's here. Even today wagons and horses are still seen along the highways. Once a young child needed to catch the bus to school so during the snowy season the grandfather bundled the child, saddled his horse and rode to the bus stop through the mud because the modern vehicles were getting stuck on the mud and that was over 10 years ago. The mode of transportation during the era of the iron horse is still same as it is today but with more motorized vehicles riding along the pavement, while horses, ATV's, and dirt bikes are better suited for the rough terrain here. Is there difference? No. It just depends on your needs at the time.

Around here it was the famous Red River cart. The axles were ungreased because the dust would gum them up solid so a person could hear them coming for miles because of the screeching.

Actually, the main mode of transport back then, by numbers of people moving about, was walking. Seriously. Even today, at any given moment, there are more people walking from one place to another, than are using any other form of transportation.

If you limit the question to how people transported their entire household and large families and large number of possessions a very long distance, specifically across land, THEN you would likely find that some kind of beast-pulled, wheeled box was involved. What ever kind of beast and wheeled box happened to be most available at the time.
