The only white smoke I care about is what comes out of my vapouriser, and hopefully not out the back of my VW's tail pipe.

This just in: It's Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the dark horse from Argentina. Francis I.
And he's on Twitter!

LOL! Of COURSE he is. One method of mind control deserves another...

And he's a Jesuit... Any bets on how long it takes the 'new world order' conspiracy nuts to latch onto that one...?

mungo, I hadn't thought of that, lol! But likely so. . . .

I was moved that a Jesuit picked Francis as a name. That's right up a Jesuit's alley, grin. . . But remains to be seen just how much one man, even the pope, can move that wad of wads around. Going to be interesting.

This man is a Jesuit; Phd in Chemistry; an educator in the natural sciences
He is also a 'humanist' fending for the poor & underprivileged
And un-assuming; living modestly; foregoing the opulence afforded to him

Lets see how this all translates to his new role at the helm of the papacy
The question will be whether or not he can bring everyone 'down to earth' where he has been
Or will there be more of the 'same' (here's the new boss, same as the old boss)

Time will tell!

St.Francis of Assisi-

"where Francis lived for some time, was a wolf "terrifying and ferocious, who devoured men as well as animals." Francis had compassion upon the townsfolk, and so he went up into the hills to find the wolf. Soon, fear of the animal had caused all his companions to flee, though the saint pressed on. When he found the wolf, he made the sign of the cross and commanded the wolf to come to him and hurt no one. Miraculously the wolf closed his jaws and lay down at the feet of St. Francis. "Brother Wolf, you do much harm in these parts and you have done great evil," said Francis. "All these people accuse you and curse you…But brother wolf, I would like to make peace between you and the people." Then Francis led the wolf into the town, and surrounded by startled citizens made a pact between them and the wolf. Because the wolf had “done evil out of hunger, the townsfolk were to feed the wolf regularly. In return, the wolf would no longer prey upon them or their flocks. In this manner Gubbio was freed from the menace of the predator. Francis even made a pact on behalf of the town dogs, that they would not bother the wolf again. Finally, to show the townspeople that they would not be harmed, Francis blessed the wolf."

You decide...

My only concern is that some RC's believe the pope talks directly to god. If so, then what did god say to the last one, for him to say "fvck this, I'm outa' here!"

here in the west, many people don't get that catholicism is not a democracy. the pope is infallible. and the rest of the church goes along with what he says. recently we've seen progressives speak out against vatican policies.

the jesuits take a vow of blind obedience. therefore, in the past, francis followed his order's tradition of carrying out benedict's doctrines. it will be interesting to see how it plays out when francis is the one calling the shots.

and, yes, the church believes that god speaks directly to the pope. again, we may not get that, but that's the way it is.

apparently he picked the name 'francis' after francis of assisi, as opposed to francis xavier. i initially assumed it was xavier, and i'm glad it was francis of assisi. i think he set up a challenge for himself by choosing that name. he has a strong, well-documented history of helping poverty-stricken communities and reaching out to jews after their building got destroyed in argentina.

i think we'll see a new direction from rome. and i wish him all the best in this challenge.

Many many catholics have evolved and no longer believe in creationism

i attended catholic school for 12 years. then i taught in a catholic school. that's where i learned about evolution. no one ever said a word about creationism. we learned science, hard science.

True, as we already know of their past failures and cover-ups, the people need to see a change if the Roman Catholic church survives into the 21 century.

And picking a priest from the now largest congregation, in South America was a good political move because of the numbers there.
Yet first there needs a in house house cleaning in their high Archy. And next it's time to catch up with the rest of the world. Like birth control, abortion, females priests, etc needs to be addressed. And to screen all who decided to become and ordained into the priesthood with frequent back round checks as a on going thing in this career.

Whether it be Penn State, the Boy Scouts, Mooseheart, the Military or any organization for that matter, there needs to be a constant accountability and safe guards in people we trust with children, young adults, etc.

Too many of the poorest people in Argentina, including some Jesuits who worked among the poor in the barrios of Buenos Aires and other cities, were killed, or disappeared, for the crime of asking for a chance of having a better life.

True, and lets see how that plays out as that is nothing new as I have lived in third world countries in the past and have seen first hand how only the higher ups, religious groups etc received the money and donations from abroad but very little if any was received by the local poor peasants there.
As these are the true crimes against humanity when you have corrupt power, ego, slavery, and evil in the name of whatever your belief is at the time in committing these atrocities in the name of God.

Good luck Pope Francis

It will be interesting to see how Liberation Theology fares under Pope Francis.

It was one thing when a European who had a deep suspicion of anything that smacked of Marxism was Pope. But Francis comes from Latin America where the doctrine was born. He's seen the abuses of humanity by the right, not just the left like John Paul II.

Where did you ever get the idea Chavez, Ché, Castro, Kirchner, Péron, et al are / were Children of the Right ... ? They're all Committed Socialists and Communists, the ideology of the LEFT (i.e., Marxism). Last time I checked, Conservatism, Freedom, Limited Government, etc and all things Right was not exactly a flower in full bloom in America del Sud. Your agenda's showing.

Do you people honestly believe ONE man makes all these decisions?

Maybe having the authority of telling everyone what may or maynot happen, but solely deciding stuff, no way.

(But more importantly, is he going to hold the priests who sexually abuse children accountable? Will he dismiss the last guy's claim that condoms deepen the AIDS crisis in Africa?

This is true, as most countries have a history of past abuse. And since you now live France, and most there are all bent out of shape for same sex marriage gay rights etc, as the same religion you condemn in the same breath as Rome?
Just wondering if you Care to comment on that one or will u speak up in that issue too?

Why is this the first pope to step down? Why were all the pedophile, boy-buggering members of the Vatican simply re-assigned and large sums of money paid to make their cardinal sins go away? I don't get it! Oh, wait, I get it.

Like any other establishment, is when 'good people' turn their head and do nothing. There are no sanctimonious places on earth where evil does not live in the minds of men and women.

As with this traditional church, they are no different. As they are still run by people, and hopefully it will run in the way it's mean to be.

Wanna look at all those weird American "churches" and cults

Yup, like mental illness everyone is looking for a purpose and meaning. Just don't drink the kool-aid ok.

Ah the new pope. Below is a true story. This arsehole is actually a member of her majestys opposition and represents an area in london in the houses of parliament.

David Lammy, the Labour MP, has apologised after accusing the BBC of spreading “silly innuendo” about the race of the Pope after he apparently failed to realise a tweet about “black or white” smoke referred to the way the conclave selects a new pontiff. Mr Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, was left embarrassed after he responded to a tweet from the BBC yesterday which said: “LIVE VIDEO: Chimney of Sistine Chapel as #conclave votes for #Pope – will smoke be black or white?” Mr Lammy then linked to the tweet from his own account and added: “This tweet from the BBC is crass and unnecessary. Do we really need silly innuendo about the race of the next Pope?” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/the-pope/9926894/Labour-MP-embarrassed-after-claiming-that-white-or-black-smoke-tweet-about-the-Pope-is-about-race.html

They walk amongst us indeed. Beware 'them' normal folk. But one good thing these divs just reinforce the knowledge amongst normal people that politicians are arseholes, labour party ones are obsessed by race and like our own 24/7 they can spout shite 365 days of the year. And 366 on a leap year.

Hope you bead rattlers have at last got someone who will actually lead your faith forward.

Time will tell but methinks once pope franny (as francis' are called over here) gets to vatican city he will find vipers playing out their game and jostling for position.

Interesting times for youse rattlers of the beads

^^^^Is this guy somehow related to Joe Biden? Electing him doesn't speak very well of the voters in Tottenham. Maybe they should pay a little less attention to their famous football team and a little more to who they send to Parliament.

No, he'd have to be related way more to Mit Romney ( MR & Ryan actually combined to make JB sound smooth & eloquent, such that he sent them both a "thank you" card for helping to keep the spot light off him and on them).

Maybe youse Anglicanics should try it too; worshipers (the few that might be left) may actually be forced to wake up during services.

It will be good to get some good conspiracy going

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End.[13] Francis (2013–present)

The prophecy of the popes is pretty interesting and regardless of opinions on it... if they believe it then the resignation was to bring about the last pope. And (if the picture isn't faked) he comes with Lightning :)

http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/10/17238040-are-cardinals-electing-the-last-pope-if-you-believe-nostradamus?lite

And for those well-versed in the language of brimstone and fire, the signs could not have been more transparent when just hours after Benedict announced he would abdicate, a bolt of lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica, the very heart of Christianity. A few days later a shower of meteorites fell and devastated a village in Russia.
