The Turtles song " Happy Together " was just playing on the music channel and I thought " nice melody but those lyrics - UGH ! Cheeze factory central !

The Carpenter song " Close to you " is another example of a nice melody, beautiful voice but sappy lyric overload

Can anyone else think of songs where you like the music but wish the lyric was different or vice versa ?

Or what about songs with decent intros but then you go " what ? aw come on , you ruined it "

Examples for me :

The intros to " Hold the Line " by Toto and " Teenage Overdose " by Loverboy

hmmm, I've been thinking about it and I can't come up with anything. I like everything I have :)
a couple songs I usually skip over in the album because they're just nonsense noise.

"Buttered Popcorn" by the Supremes (1961). This song was not lead sung by Diana Ross, but by the late Florence Ballard who does a strange laugh numerous times throughout the song. Despite that, I do own a rare original Tamla Label (Not the more common Tamla "globes" label) 45 record of this song.

My baby likes buttered popcorn
He likes it greasy
And sticky
And gooey
And salty
I said what do you like
He says you know what I like
I like buttered popcorn

He took me to a show
He said he wanted some more
I said kiss me please
He said after I eat

I said what do you like
He says you know what I like
I like buttered popcorn

For breakfast, lunch and a dinner too
He eats buttered popcorn
Well it worries me so
I don't know what to do
When I asked him what was happenin' in the world today
He said more butter, more butter, more butter, more

My baby likes buttered popcorn
He likes it greasy
And sticky
And gooey
And salty
I said what do you like
He says you know what I like
I like buttered popcorn

For breakfast, lunch and a dinner too
He eats buttered popcorn
Well it worries me so
I don't know what to do
When I asked him
What was happenin' in the world today
He said more butter, more butter, more butter, more

My baby likes buttered popcorn
He likes it greasy
And sticky
And gooey
And salty
I said what do you like
He says you know what I like
I like buttered popcorn

Are you saying you like the melody but not the lyrics or vice versa ?

It's not their best song either way IMO.
Oral sex compared to popcorn ? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Chuck, the melody isn't bad, but the lyrics and Florence's laughing is a bit challenging to listen to. Until 1964, they were known as the "No Hit Supremes". They were very young (17 -18), but not very polished.

“Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics.

Annie Lennox had a dynamite voice (still does, actually), but those lyrics were just a bunch of trite, common adages and easy rhymes she threw together while sitting in front of a piano, one day (probably under a chemical influence or two). Very little afterthought… and a lot more effort went into the music than the words. I was surprised she didn’t sing “an apple a day”, “no news is good news”, or “the grass is always greener”, etc.

Naturally, that became their biggest hit, and “signature” song. :-D

^^^^^ The thing that always bugged me about that song is that the lyric is " sweet dreams are made of THIS " but it SOUNDS like she's saying " THESE ".

She is a good singer, tho

I had a couple coil tapes in the 90s. they disappeared when I threw all my tapes out. I think it was just dubbed off of a friends tape.

I'd say most Burt Bacharach songs would qualify - can't remember the name of the lyricist offhand. Something David I think.

Tea for Two is the classic example in my opinion. The song has been kept alive mostly because jazz musicians love to riff on it.

"One Less Bell To Answer" by The 5th Dimension. Song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

An absolutely beautiful song Marilyn McCoo torches with one strange line..."One less egg to fry."

Only 1 egg? Was he watching his cholesterol?

Nonetheless, Marilyn McCoo and Florence LaRue were stunning in this appearance on Soul Train. Just before the 2 minute mark, a good closeup of Florence's well defined abs.

Type O Negative did a song with quite a beautiful melody to it, but called it 'My Girlfriend's Girlfriend', and the lyrics were about the singer having a threesome with his girlfriend and her best friend.

I guess if you don't understand the lyrics of "Happy Together" you might consider it cheesy.

"Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)"

Simple but not cheesy!
This is not a love song... it is actually an unrequited love song.
There is only one party buying into the love story.
The line "How is the Weather" is the kicker. At this point the dreamer acknowledges he has no real relationship with the "you" in "me and You".
Brilliant!
And brilliantly performed (not written by) by the very cheesy Mothers of Invention i.e., Flow and Eddie i.e. The Turtles!

"Punky's Dilemma"

Wish I was a Kellogg's Cornflake
Floatin' in my bowl takin' movies,
Relaxin' awhile, livin' in style
Talkin' to a raisin who occasionally plays L.A.
Casually glancing at his toupee

Wish I was an English muffin
'Bout to make the most out of a toaster
I'd ease myself down
Comin' up brown
I prefer boysenberry
More than any ordinary jam
I'm a "Citizens for Boysenberry Jam" fan

Ah, South California

If I became a first lieutenant
Would you put my photo on your piano?
"To Maryjane-
Best wishes, Martin"

Old Roger draft dodger
Leavin' by the basement door
Everybody knows what he's
Tippy-toeing down there for

Of course, you're talking about the climax aka the orgasm of the songs but IMO both songs have great " foreplays " leading up to them.

But yeah, you can only listen to some songs so many times. I've prolly heard both at least 1000 times by now.

I could probably think of some -but I can't seem to write anything else myself.

I have written some poetry I feel good about -have written some guitar stuff I feel good about
-but when I try to write lyrics for a song I can't seem to get it right in any way.
I can't seem to make lyrics fit the timing of the music -can't seem to express ideas well in lyrics, etc., etc.

Buttercheickenchuck- It's GOT to be The kinks, You really got me.
It was popular then and still is somewhat now due the the catchy melody, but lyrically, it's repetitious and trite.
