Andy Partridge is one of the best at painting pictures in his songs, and they're truly works of art:

I'm floating over strange land,
It's a soulless, sequined, showbiz moon.
I'm floating over strange land,
And then stranger still, there's no balloon.
But I'm getting higher,
Wafted up by fame's fickle fire 'til the...

Chalkhills and children,
Anchor my feet.
Chalkhills and children,
Bringing me back to earth,
Eternally and ever Ermine Street.

Just like a mad dog you're chasing your tail in a circle
Just like a mad dog you're chasing your tail in a circle
It's all in your back yard
You've the whole world at your feet
I said the grass is always greener when it bursts up through concrete

Push your car from the road
Push your car from the road

River of Orchids winding our way
Want to walk into London on my hands one day
River of Orchids the road overgrows
Want to walk into London smelling like a Peckham beggar rose

And every Troy with wooden horse
I take to peaceful waters but can't make him drown
And every Bastille that gets stormtroopered
"Hail to the Chief" comes rainin', rainin', rainin', rainin' down
And I've seen people conduct lightning down to a summer's day
And I've seen nations playfully hurl snowballs packed with stones and clay
And I know rain inside your head can seriously put a stop to play
But no matter what the weather, you and the clouds will still be beautiful
No matter what the weather, you and the clouds will still be beautiful

Warm smell of collita rising up through the air.

Eagles, Hotel California.

Dunno what a collita smells like, but I liked the description n found they are a night scented desert flower.

Couple of months ago I was listening to one of Scott Walkers songs, No regrets. I listened possibly for the first time or maybe I just forgot but the third line of the chorus slapped me between the eyes.

There's no regrets
No tears goodbye
Don't want you back
We'd only cry again
Say goodbye again

It says so much about situations most of us have been through. That bit where you're tempted to try once more but you know it would be a desperate painful waste of time.

If it's an option for you Pauline, I'd recommend spending a few hours with square especially at a gig you'd enjoy...sure he's a gentleman and a scholar.

Anyway, my favourite lyrics have been written by Ian Dury...I love his playfulness with words and his lack of fear when speaking out about his everyday observations, there's nothing contrived about that...I wish to God I'd had his child but I never met him.

Otherwise, I adore Tom Waits' marvellous storytelling ability and invitation by him to take a more sympathetic view of other people's lives when I might have been more judgemental.

@ Hostess..

....and may the road rise up etc.

It's kind of mad to think that the first and second plus Irish generations had such an impact on what's known as 'brit-pop'...John Lydon, Morrissey, Boy George, Shane McGowan, the Gallagher brothers, David Bowie, most of the Beatles, Gerry Rafferty...there's loads... even Robbie Williams ...it's mad because they wouldn't have been given the same opportunity in Ireland....the same way national t.v. here decided Father Ted would never be a success and today its writers are exalted, thank heavens for the U.K.

Have any of you heard of Aslan

I remember way back when seeing Jim Kerr and two other of his crew walking towards Grafton Street from The Shelbourne...the other two might have been members of the band, I was on my way to my bus stop on the other side of Stephen's Green...we were on opposite sides of the road and even though I was in a hurry I couldn't help but notice three really cool looking blokes strolling along in the wrong direction to mine...I was rather pleased to see such trendy looking fellas, it made me smile...they noticed me acknowledging them with that smile of mine but at the time I didn't know who they were, I just thought they looked interesting...they mistakenly took my delight as recognition of their fame and collapsed in a heap of giggles...big drips!

I sort of kind of encountered David Bowie in a small intimate nightclub called 'sides'....this place was those in the know's secret, few people were aware of it except for the lucky few - me (and my pals but even then I was choosy who to invite to this oasis) and an elite group of musos, it was a good spot and one night Bowie turned up...he didn't act at all as if he was famous, he was just taking it easy, taking in the view, relaxed and cheerful. Normally punters would pay a fortune to get into the Pink Elephant or Reynaud's just to be pushed aside because someone famous had entered the building.

Probably the "Vesti la giubba" bit from R. Leoncavallo "Pagliacci".
Below is a translation (wiki) however I must warn you that they don't have the same impact read and even worse in English. You have to listen to Luciano's interpretation (in Italian of course) for max emotion.

Act! While in delirium,
I no longer know what I say,
or what I do!
And yet it's necessary... make an effort!
Bah! Are you not a man?
You are a clown!

Put on your costume, powder your face.
The people pay, and they want to laugh.
And if Harlequin shall steal your Columbina,
laugh, clown, so the crowd will cheer!
Turn your distress and tears into jest,
your pain and sobbing into a funny face – Ah!

Laugh, clown,
at your broken love!
Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!

I love this song as it describes well some of what's been discussed in another thread...it's about an old soak thinking a woman at the bar could be his for the taking except he passes up on a few opportunities to grab her attention...but she's at the bar with a friend and she isn't aware that in his mind he's thinking of taking her home that night....that her being there is permission enough for him to believe she's as lonely and as desperate as him and therefore ripe for plucking...

Tom Waits – I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You Lyrics

Well I hope that I don't fall in love with you
'Cause falling in love just makes me blue,
Well the music plays and you display
Your heart for me to see,
I had a beer and now I hear you
Calling out for me
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you.

Well the room is crowded, people everywhere
And I wonder, should I offer you a chair?
Well if you sit down with this old clown,
Take that frown and break it,
Before the evening's gone away,
I think that we could make it,
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you.

Well the night does funny things inside a man
These old tom-cat feelings you don't understand,
Well I turn around to look at you,
You light a cigarette,
I wish I had the guts to bum one,
But we've never met,
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you.

I can see that you are lonesome just like me,
And it being late, you'd like some company,
Well I turn around to look at you,
And you look back at me,
The guy you're with has up and split,
The chair next to you's free,
And I hope that you don't fall in love with me.

Now it's closing time, the music's fading out
Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout.
Well I turn around to look at you,
You're nowhere to be found,
I search the place for your lost face,
Guess I'll have another round
And I think that I just fell in love with you.

[Verse 1]
Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out, “My God, they killed them all!”
Here comes the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world

[Verse 2]
Three bodies lying there does Patty see
And another man named Bello, moving around mysteriously
“I didn’t do it,” he says, and he throws up his hands
“I was only robbing the register, I hope you understand
I saw them leaving,” he says, and he stops
“One of us had better call up the cops”
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashing
In the hot New Jersey night

[Verse 3]
Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driving around
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that
In Paterson that’s just the way things go
If you’re black you might as well not show up on the street
Unless you want to draw the heat

[Verse 4]
Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around
He said, “I saw two men running out, they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates”
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said, “Wait a minute, boys, this one’s not dead”
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men

[Verse 5]
Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs
The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye
Says, “Why did you bring him in here for? He is not the guy!”
Yes, here’s the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world

[Verse 6]
Four months later, the ghettos are in flame
Rubin’s in South America, fighting for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley’s still in the robbery game
And the cops are putting the screws to him, looking for somebody to blame
“Remember that murder that happened in a bar?”
“Remember you said you saw the getaway car?”
“You think you’d like to play ball with the law?”
“Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw running that night?”
“Don’t forget that you are white”

[Verse 7]
Arthur Dexter Bradley said, “I’m really not sure”
Cops said, “A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we’re talking to your friend Bello
Now you don’t want to have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow
You’ll be doing society a favor
That sonofa**** is brave and getting braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
He ain’t no Gentleman Jim”

[Verse 8]
Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It’s my work, he’d say, and I do it for pay
And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse

[Verse 9]
All of Rubin’s cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance
The judge made Rubin’s witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigga
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed

[Verse 10]
Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder “one,” guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool’s hand?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game

[Verse 11]
Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell
That’s the story of the Hurricane
But it won’t be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he’s done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world
