Something Needs To Be Done About ScammersPage 1 of 2    (1, 2)
Nude pictures
Endless fake profiles

I'm getting tired of reporting it all.

One quick thing can be done already. Whenever somebody attempts to upload an image, search for that image via google and tineye. If a result comes up from a flagged website (flag over time), ban them then and there. If a result comes up from an unflagged website, like instagram, they may still be fake so it may require investigation. Instagram will show things like age/name. Compare it to the age/name they use on pof. They don't match? Ban them then and there. Essentially, automate the thing I've been doing.

Thanks.

Heavily improved security during the signup process is needed. An image search is a great idea, but many of the scammers have a decent portion of the image blocked off advertising a website, which may interfere with this. Banning MAC address may help, at least in the short run.
But, yeah, this is crazy. It seems 90%+ of new profiles that appear on “Meet Me” are now fake profiles.

Banning MAC address may help

MAC address doesn't pass through internet routers so it's impossible to block based on MAC address.

Besides MAC address is easily spoofed.

I agree. I'm seeing them every day and it's very disheartening. I would actually pay more money to be a member if patrons were screened. I'm very frustrated and will probably not renew if this keeps up. I got so aggravated this morning when one messaged me, I almost wrote something that would have got me banned. What else can we do?Thanks for sharing your thought and idea.

I agree that POF needs to do something about scammers. I get absolutely harassed by them.

1 out of 5 women are fake on POF.

Actually... couldn't POF just ban any access from proxy servers?

From what I hear, the scammers use proxy servers to trick POF into thinking they're Canadian or American when they're infact located in South America or Africa...

VPN services can make you look like you are pretty much anywhere in the world. I have NordVPN and I only pay a few dollars a month. When I use it, I look like I'm in Switzerland. What POF needs to do is block hotmail, gmail, ymail, and any other free email servers. Anyone that has an ISP gets an email address like Xfinity, or Shaw, or Bell, or CenturyLink, etc. That would weed out a lot of scammers.

Really, do people still use email addresses from their ISP? What happens when you change ISP, which is very common these days? You have to tell everyone you've got a new email address, change every single account with every company you have on the internet (amazon, paypal, forums, etc etc). What a nightmare.

Using your ISP's email service is a terrible idea, it's a relic from the 80's and that is where is should stay!

Suggestions for POF to make the site more spam free
Posted: 2/10/2018 1:08:02 PM
Does anyone else notice that when they report profiles with its obvious violations, that they get flooded by a dozen or two fake meet me hits over night? Plus, none of them looked at your profile.

The phony profiles have common elements. A Super Model with 1 photo. Less than 10 words in their about me page. And the first thing they do is ask for you to check out a website if you try to send them a message or give you their gmail email or kik address.

Suggestion #1:
Don't allow .com to be used in the 1st email.

Suggestion #2:
Given the spammers always upload 1 photo, please make it mandatory that there are 2 photos. That way it's harder for them to create a fake profile since now they at least need 2 matching profile photos and have to do extra work. Allowing just one photo is encouraging spammers since it is too easy.

Suggestion #3:
You need to give people the option to report profiles on the suspicion of it being a fake account without penalty. Right now if we flag a profile we're putting ourselves at risk if we make a false report. Instead, modify it that if a profile gets like 20 suspicious flags in a week by individual members or 10 in a day by individual members then that it gets taken down. I'm sure those fake profiles are being spotted often enough where people can flag it when its obvious. By having a higher total than just 3 you won't have just one member and their two room-mates who get pissed off trying to knock you off the site with their false reports.

The suggestions should be easy to implement. Ultimately, I think we can improve the experience on this site by doing them.

Suggestions for POF to make the site more spam free

Keep in mind that the scammers or sex site advertisers are using macro's/bots. (a macro is a small program that controls mouse and key board inputs)

The macro is able to generate a random name that is usually in this format: "womans name, 4 numbers, womans name". It will copy and paste generic phrases copied from other profiles, then add a sentence directing you to an external sex site such as " L'E'T'SS'CR3w dot (c) (o) (m)".

The picture is always stolen but never turns up positive when reverse imaged searched because the picture size is altered or has an ad pasted on it. The profession almost never matches the age and appearance of the woman. For example a 24 yr old woman advertised as a pharmacist? Not likely at that age. The headline is usually sexually explicit like "My boobs at whatever dot com".

The dangerous profiles are the ones that ask for an email address.

The profiles can last as little as 20 minutes and are usually quickly deleted. I'm not sure if POF is doing this, or the macro. Then another new profile will be created instantly. I've seen as many as 5 simultaneous profiles online in my city advertising the same site. It's always late night when I see them suggesting the scammer may be 8 hours behind where I live. That'd put them in China or Russia.

They must be using proxy servers to disguise their location.

Some video games can detect and ban macro's because they can detect mouse click patterns. Maybe thats another way of banning?

You cannot edit posts until you have made a certain number of posts. I do not recall the exact number but it is something like three or maybe five. (?)

I highly suspect that some of these scammers read the Fish forums and realize just how easy it is to pull the wool over many posters eyes. People who have no business pursuing OLD much less giving advice about it. They possibly extrapolate that posters are typical Fish members.

Anyone unable to spot and avoid a scammer probably should not be driving either.

Totally agree, though it's even easier for pof to block these accounts at the moment. All of the user names used follow the same format e.g. NameName_0000. They should just look out for patterns like that and block all straight away.
sadly, it appears to be the case that pof are actually ok with all the porn circulating on their website. Which is only reinforced by the way they make it impossible to contact them :(

If you want POF to do something about the scammers, STOP reporting the scammer profiles.

Hear me out...

POF has no incentive to make any changes to improve the site. They don't need to have developers create all these scam-stopping tools you're imagining. They don't need to because they have an army of thirsty, frustrated dudes reporting the scam profiles, and volunteers or low-paid nontechnical staff to see the reports and click a button.

STOP reporting scammers.
STOP reporting nudity.
STOP reporting profiles with improper headshots.

POF already has a bad reputation, but it remains popular because it's free. Let the site get filled up with garbage and see what happens. It will either become a scammer wasteland -OR- POF will be forced to take proactive measures to clean it up.

Tell others. If you want POF to improve, stop being an unpaid POF employee.

I think BornTexan has the right idea. Let the problem get completely out of hand and either the site will close from lack of real members, or an effort will be made to repair it. Unless something drastic happens in the world of cybercrime and the laws surrounding it, such as legislation holding site owners responsible for losses incurred by scammers (Which as far as I see, could happen someday, though I fear the precedent this may set), I figure that the former is much more likely to happen. PoF is more likely to be closed entirely than it is to see the efforts made to repair its various issues and start closing some security loopholes. Given the patterns that the scam profiles have been using lately, it's clear they found a pattern that works in creating profiles and naming them. Keeping them out will always be a cat and mouse type battle. Soon as one type of scam is blocked, the scammers will find a way around it. At this point, unless the scammers move on to more lucrative means of fraud, the scam profiles in some quantity or another will be here and elsewhere for a long while.

Unfortunately, due to the easy access for everybody this dating site has, spammers are going to be a reality. It's a business - it's called Nigerian boileroom scam......these people will do anything for money, it's just business to them.

Pof does a fantastic job of getting rid of them though......if not for all the work they do deleting them quickly and banning them, the site would be overrun. I have to commend them on their efforts.

I know websites that make you send in a picture of your id card (license). I'm OK with it. I don't know if they can actually run it through a police system for a checkup but they should do that and people should agree to it if they are serious.

If it is a fake person they won't talk to you on the phone... Simple as that.
