Boy did I dust off this old topic.

This subject is very interesting for me as I have a growing vinyl collection that features mostly female singers and girl groups. One singer not mentioned so far is Minnie Riperton. The CD that's currently in my car stereo is her solo debut "Come to my Garden" released in 1970 and re-released in 1974. I have a copy of each release on vinyl as well.

The album is absolutely incredible. The production and backup singers are something else. The first song I discovered from this album is track #9 "Only When I'm Dreaming". It came across on my Pandora station and I was blown away.

Below is the entire album.

Funny you mention Ripperton, I was watching a weird Joaquin Phoenix movie, Inherent Vice , recently , heard a song, liked it, and found out it was called "Les Fleurs " by Minnie

I seem to like lady singers, now I think about it,
here's mine, in alphabetical order
Joan Armatrading.
Shawn Colvin.
Tracy Chapman.
Toni Childs.
Marianne Faithful (Does a version of "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" on "Broken English", which is sublime)
Roberta Flack.
Millie Jackson. (I love "Still Caught up")
Annie Lennox
Beverley Martin (Of the late John and Beverley Martin, especially on "Stormbringer", very mellow, and one of my favourite albums...)
Joni Mitchell
Stevie Nicks
Sinead O'Connor.
Christine Perfect (Later McVie. Of Fleetwood Mac. Listen to their version of "I'd rather Go Blind" circa 1970[?])
Eddi Reader (From Fairground Attraction)
Margo Timmins (From Cowboy Junkies)
Tracy Thorn (From Everything But the Girl)
Michelle Shocked.
Suzzanne Vega.
Jennifer Warnes. (Famous Blue Raincoat is a great 'tribute' album IMO., played it today. -and LC does a guest spot.)

I'm sure I've forgotten some too...
And that's without all the Motown ladies;
Martha Reeves, Diana Ross, Tammy Terrell, (sp) Nina Simone, Gladys Knight,
Too many to list.

All on vinyl too, naturally.

Not As Famous -Yet Favorite Female Singers-

when I was a young nerd (as opposed to an older one), I didn't know what the cool songs were, so I went to the left side of the radio dial (kids, ask your parents what a "radio" or a "dial" is) to research college radio and to learn. In reality, what I found was music ahead of what my peers were listening to--so I still didn't know the cool stuff, I knew the good stuff and the future-cool stuff. In the old days, we could talk to a stranger in an elevator about what was on Carson last night. Now, with all the youtube and cable channels and internet, we can still find someone who can talk about Walking Dead references.

I don't mind posts like this, there's a chance those who want to hear something new, might get a lead on a voice they haven't heard before. I'll just toss in Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation and the Gathering's Anneke van Giersbergen with The Metropole Orchestra :

what I think of when someone says, "a voice like water." Of course, years from now when someone rehashes this post, they'll think of America's flaming rivers post EPA and wonder what I was referring to today :)

Tammy Terrell

I just watched a documentary on her. Tammi's life was so short and so tragic. Gang raped as a teen, a couple of abusive relationships (James Brown and David Ruffin (Temptations)), and 8 brain surgeries in a span of 3 years.

Despite all of that she persevered and had a career that started around 15-16 till she died in 1970 at age 24. I have a double CD that covers her entire solo recordings ("Come on and See Me" - The Complete Solo Collection) and another double CD that covers all of her duets with Marvin Gaye (The Complete Duets)

Hard to fathom that the following clip is from 50 years ago. Her sex appeal was very subtle which adds to her mystique.

I told her that you send someone a msg if you're interested not to simply give them your opinion of their appearance.

She just responded that she could be interested if we didn't live on opposite sides of the border and that I don't take "healthy criticism " well.

Then she deleted her account.

What a shame, she seemed like a keeper

Tammy Terrell.....wow, haven't heard her name for so long. "Ain't nothing like the real thing" with Marvin Gaye. What an awesome song growing up. Brings back good memories. And Marvin Gaye, also an icon. Listening to their music right now. Nice!!
