No, you’re entirely correct; the radio does suck nowadays.

Soulless has the right idea, there are some great radio stations on-line. Just look around; you’re bound to find one that interests you.

Radio does Suck,we have all agreed to this.
Forgive this rant,it seems we are being handstrung by the corp record companies who need dollars to fuel the business,so they railroad the consumers with this endless hit parade of not really good music and hope that the music will sell.
I just turned 50 and I can easily recall stations that played what they felt like playing,if you are out here in L>A> like I am yes hard to believe but KROQ really did that it rocked, but now that corporations have taken over the airwaves, they forcefeed this junk.
Forget the regular stations bless satellite stations

What really kills me is that broadcast radio doesn't even get it. Their latest offering in the high tech market is HD Radio. This is digitally broadcast over the airwaves and decoded by your reciever (radio), which, by the way, will not work with your conventional reciever unless it was specifically designed to receiver these signals. Read- more money. So if you've got the right receiver you will now be able to listen to pristine digital audio from your local radio station.
The problem? It's the same crap we're listening to now. They don't get it- the problem is content, not quality! I would rather see all the money being spent on this technology subsidizing quality radio, than making shitty radio sound better. Thank god for Public Radio, Internet Radio, Satellite Radio and CDs...

It depends where you live. I just moved to Columbus, GA. There is only one station that pklays classic rock. But they also play 80's, 90's and today's rock. Frankly a lot of the newer rock sucks. I prefer mostly the classic. When I was in S. FL I had two classic rock stations to listen to. One from W. Palm and the other from Miami.

I hate my local radio stations. I didn't mind it so much when I was living in Calgary for a while (CJAY 92 was pretty good at the time). As for now I only listen to my own music. The only way I'll be listening to radio anytime soon is if I'm forced to because it's played at my place of employment.

CJAY sucks now too! All they play is 54-40 (even though they've done nothing lately), The Trews & Sam Roberts ALL DAY LONG!!!!!

radio sucks badly. Top 40 is the worst of all not to mention the worst music being made right now. They all play the same stuff over and over again and not just top 40 radio either. Classic rock insists on playing the same tired Led Zeppelin songs over again and why must they play the awful Eagles. Oldies radio is a tragedy. They never play anything that was made prior to the Beatles and they mostly play 70's stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Doobie Brothers that stuff dont belong on an oldies station

Internet radio is great... In my car I can only tolerate the NPR stations... everything else is just life support for endless commercials or ranting hate groups.

I missed the days when radio had freedom and DJ's could play what they wanted. Its the same at all radio(except for college and free form radio), they pretty much have a play list and play the same stuff over and over again

here is the bad part

Top 40 radio: whatever is a hit you will hear over and over again

Classic Rock Radio: Same old tired stuff from Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and the Eagles

Oldies Radio: Seldom do they play anything that came out in the 50's or early 60's and why is 70's music like the Eagles, Doobie Brothers and Bachman Turner Overdrive on oldies radio?

As far as I am concerned no radio station never ever needs to play an Eagles record again

doesnt help when some of the radio station is practically own by record companies ...

maybe not directly, but through sponsors, ads, etc etc ...

you ever wonder why they're jamming ashlee simpsons down our throat?

imagine if radio stations are free from all that corporate crap ... I'm sure we'll be hearing a whole lot of different playlist altogether ...

A friend once said "show me someone who gets upset over radio and I will show you a person that has a small music collection". Satellite radio I dont think is any better than mainstream radio, still play the same tired songs over and over again.

Its not really a conspiracy by the record companies to pay big money to have their stuff played... its simple economics. The radio station has to keep as many people tuned in on the quarter hours as possible so they can charge enough money to the advertisers to make a profit. That means that they have to play music that is a safe bet for the majority of the people who listen to their particular format. That typically means that the stuff that is viewed as popular is considered to be safe... thus it gets played. A lot.

What does that mean for Skippy and the Wonderfuls, that totally 'cool' indie band that plays at the local bar or in their garage? They probably won't get much air play. Just because you and your drinking buddies go there and think they are the shiz-nit doesn't mean that many other people, if anyone else at all, will think the same way.

Sure, a radio station can give them a shot. But that could potentially mean thousands of people hitting the next pre-set button on their radio. Thats potential money lost. Is that risk worth it for some garage band?

Sometimes it would be.... many times it probably wouldn't. Its too big of a gamble for most corporate stations to take.

That risk is for the few college style radio stations left... pirate radio.... and internet radio.

One word: PAYOLA
Look it up on Wikipedia.

It's technically illegal, but it's still happening. It seems that the only times and places that really great music has been played has been when it's NOT a huge money maker. For example, the rock and roll explosion happened when music was a boutique industry. The blues happened in the fields and in the clubs. Jazz happened on the underside of city life. Hip-hop as well. The punk explosion was, and still exists, as DIY movement. Occasionally something comes along that blows everything out of the water (Tin Pan Alley,Elvis,The Beatles,The Sex Pistols, Nirvana) and is popular at the same time, leaving the industry scrambling like the bunch of fools they are. While they're scrambling good music slips in through the cracks.

It's been said before that the industry hated The Beatles because they made it ok for the performers to write their own songs, thus taking away the publishing wing, and giving them less control over artists. As far as business is concerned, dealing with "artists" is a hassle. The ideal for a record company is to have performers who are EMPLOYEES. Pop radio is dominated by performers who play other people's songs because it is a good short term business strategy for companies with a huge media share (IE they control what, where, and who gets played). In short, monopoly encourages mediocrity as a succesful business strategy.

I hope the internet revolution makes it impossible for record companies to make money. Then each musician is self employed. Record shops become boutique where they do exist. Of course if the internet is deregulated as happened to radio, then you'll have large companies buying up huge portions of media share, and the same problems.

You heard it hear folks, piracy is good for art! YAAAr maties!

"I listen to non comercialised radio on FM,Triple J its called.I dont like any other crappy stations. "

I'm sorry, but this is a serious bugbear for yours truly... As someone who's been involved in Coomunity radio since 1981, Triple J is just as commercial as the FOX's and Triple M 's, it just plays SLIGHTLY more alternative music. And bear in mind it's also part of the "youth" arm of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (and in fact is deemed a government body, NOT a broadcaster and as such ISN'T bound by the same rules and regs as the rest of us. They can take heaps more chances than anyone else yet don't.

Australia has some wonderful community broadcasters, who simply don't get the recognition they deserve

All radio sucks, apart from The Mars Bar on 94.9 fm (http://therock.fm) every thursday & friday night from 7-12pm EST.

Mind you, it's when I hear songs that I don't know that I like radio...:)

I've worked in radio, and things have changed in a very drastic way. Not only is there no decent music played, but there is no such thing as air personalities anymore. I used to tune in to listen to certain deejays because I enjoyed their shows. All of this is gone. You have to play your own music.
