I have a Spyro Gyra and Chick Corea Elektric Band CD if that counts. I'm not really a smooth jazz person in particular, I just like all types of jazz. But Kenny G is right out!

Cheers!

I don't want to sound condescending, but I never considered "smooth jazz" really jazz. It has such a pop-ish sound to me, that I can't consider it jazz. George Benson was a kind of cool jazz musician, but I'd never consider his music "smooth jazz".
I don't dig it at all.

HRWild I agree with you. I can see why people like smooth jazz and that is fine but I prefer straight ahead jazz from old time dixieland(Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and those guys) to early fusion and just about everythiing in between. One smooth jazz artist I can do without is Kenny G. To me thats more easy listening evevator music.

That's it! You hit it right on the head , DJMac- it sounds like elevator music to this jazz lovers ears. Well, if you are into "smooth jazz", that is fine.
However, to me Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll, John Coltrane, Miles, Bird, Diz, Sonny Rollins, and later - Larry Coryell, Michael Brecker and some fusion bands like RTF and Weather Report and Mahivishnu play jazz. Some much later jazz musician like Paul Taylor is an amazing horn player. This is jazz music.
I don't get why the music referred to as 'smooth jazz' is referred to as jazz at all. I am not condemning anyone for their taste in music, but I just can't see/hear this as jazz.

That's just my feeling on the subject. Different strokes for different folks.

Oh i loves me some smooth jazz. lol. Sade, Anita baker, Peter white, Jeff lober, Grover Washington, Brian culbertson, Bob james, Kenny G, Boney James....... I mean i can go on forever lol. Started listening when i was like 11 years old. I liked that it was soothing. So i would turn it on every night while i was going to sleep. And i began to love it. I even made my own smooth jazz music on myspace. Its still up at: www.myspace.com/Ojmanley
They took my smooth jazz station away here in philly which is messed up.

I've heard some smooth jazz that I've liked, but it's generally too homogenized for my taste. I prefer jazz-fusion which is another hybrid of jazz, but not necessarily so "smooth".

I prefer my jazz to be free but if I had to pick an artist it would be Chet Baker.
