A number of years ago, whilst traveling to Powell River, I happened to meet a lady from California. We were on the ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay.

It was one of those rare and perfect days, sunny with no clouds to be seen in any direction, warm to the point that even with the ferry created wind, we were in short sleeved, light coverings. We leaned on the railing, looking towards the distant tracings of waterfalls cascading into the inlet. We spoke of the blue green mountains in the distance and how they almost blended with the sea. There was no trace of habitation; We could have been looking at a scene from the 18th Century as the day was so pure and unspoiled.

She shared that she was a teacher of young children (grades 3 and 5), and had been doing that for about 10 years. The Bald Eagles could be seen above a passing island soaring and dipping, looking, no doubt for lunch. We watched the sun kissing the ripples on the water till it hurt your eyes, even with dark sunglasses on.

I truly felt that this was one of "those" moments in life, when ALL things are perfect and the world would go on forever. I turned to her and said, "Well, what do you think of the scenery here in B.C? She answered after reflecting for a moment. "Well there really isn't much scenery, you know. Too much green, trees, water and no buildings to give interest to the landscape". To this I replied, "That is what you think? and you teach children? Beautiful! just forking Beautiful!!!!!!!!"...........A true story!!!

Well, i find a well written book beautiful.

A steak sandwich that both tickles your tastebuds and caresses your nose. It's a beautiful thing.

The white clouds scudding through the sky... it's not beautiful but it is peaceful.

All you folks waxing rapturously... it's a touchie feelie, hunkie dorie, wrapped up in lambs wool kinda thing. Makes me want to hurl... but that's just me. So I guess it's beautiful... but i'm testing my blood sugar to make sure you aren't sending me into an insulin coma.

Now that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer, I am finding beauty where before I might have missed it before. Too bad everyone can't be blessed with this vision without all the related hassles.

I always have found skies just before and just after a wild summer thunderstorm to be absolutely amazing. I have a photo of my white (leopard appy actually) horse silhouetted against a dark blue angry sky. I think it is one of the most beautiful scenes in the world. The trust in the eyes of one of my dogs when they look at me, a newborn baby goat (or calf or horse or...).....but then I'm just a touchie feelie, hunkie dorie, lambswooly kinda gal :)

I have lived here in BC for over 14 years now...and truly still find myself in awe of the beautiful things that surround us here... just "breath taking"... we take so many things forgranted

Saph & Misseyes...big warm fuzzy hugs to you both... when something happens in our lives that makes us think how truly important the little things are ...we see them in a whole new light...

I saw things in a whole new light in 1999, my grandmother was in the hospital in Orangeville Ontario...and very close to death... I had gone back to see her over thanksgiving weekend...to say my good byes to in anticipation that this would be the last time I would see her, even if she did not pass while I was there... I could be at peace. She had a beautiful view of farm land and the autumn trees... I asked her several times that day if there was anything I could get for her as she was in great discomfort suffering from congestive heart failure.

The first time I asked...she looked outside gazed upon the beautiful countryside with the bright, brillant colours of Ontario's autumn leaves... she said quielty "Fresh Air"....

A little while later I asked her again... and she replied "some water"... I did not know however that she was not supposed to have any water as she was on a thickened liquid diet because of the congestive heart failure... I gave her a sip...and she started to choke . I ran and got the nurse & they told me I should't have given it to her. I was perplexed because there it was right besider her bed..why would they have it there if she wasnt allowed it. Grandma said..."its ok dear"

Once she settle down again... I asked her again.."Grandma...is there anything I can get you"... She said to me with a little hope... "A bath... I got sick on myself before you came and would like to clean up a little"... I went and asked the nurses if she could have one & they told me no as she had one already that morning. This was one request I could not do much about..and apologized to her...not knowing what else to do or say.

Finally I said to her "Grandma can I do anything to make you more comfortable"...as she was starting to cough again from the congestive heart failrue....and she said, ever so child like.."Would you stroke my hair"...and so..I did so...as I knew it was the one thing that would help her relax.

I had to end my visit with her as she was tired and needed to also go see my Opa in Oakville for his Birthday, which was the same day... I felt awful... for having to leave her...not knowing if I'd see her again or not. Although I left the hospital in tears and feeling guilty for leaving her... I was given comforrt that I had tried to make my grandmother as comfortable as possilbe.

Prior to Thanksgiving...she had become very demanding & sometimes quite short with my other family members that were there to deal with her on a daily basis. Likely because she had also been hosptialized in May with congestive heart failure and then broke her hip trying to get out of bed to go to the bathroom... We should have known then ... she was gonna fight anyway she could!!

The doctors were so amazed that she fought back... as I said she was like a little girl at times...and was very afraid... she told my aunt this after she got out of the hosptial. The amazing thing about my grandmother was while she was in the hosptial over that thanksgiving weekend...there would be moments when you looked at her...and you were lookin right through her, like looking at death... I found this very upsetting... BUT then a few minutes later...Grandama or Margie, as her friends affectionatley called her, had that sparkle in her eye back. When I left that afternoon... I Knew I would not be able to see her again...but somehow sensed that it wasn't her time to go quite yet..because that sparkle popped back into her eyes when we least expected it.

What was different this time was you could tell she was truly appreciative of all the "little things" Life is to short for us to take such simple things as "fresh air", "a sip of water", "a bath" or "just having your hair stroked". You could tell she was gaining some acceptance of how ill she really was... Amazingly enough... she astonished us all & the doctors and improved once again... What a fighter she was!! The doctors had said ...this woman truly does have 9 lives after having had a broken hip, congestive heart failure a total of 3 times!!! My Grandmother finally did pass away in June 2000... 7 months after I had made my trip to say good bye in my own way without saying the words.

SO... WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL... MY GRANDMA, LIFE...THE SIMPLE THINGS OF LIFE...LIKE THE ONES MY GRANDMA ASKED FOR... SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL & SPUNKY SOUL... I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DEARLY GRANDMA... AND I WILL ALWAYS KEEP MY CHIN UP !!

I find the raising of my 2 daughters and the joy and pain they have brought me through fatherhood.
Each day you write a page in the "parenting" manual, and each night you rip it up and throw it away.
The beauty of watching them grow and learn, from birth, to today and beyond, is a beautiful and awe inspiring experience that is never static.

Of course hoping on my bike and cruising through the countryside on a warm summer evening, the smell of fresh cut hay, charcoal bar b q and the feel of the heat from an overcooked roadbed cooling at night........a different kinda beautiful.

POF cut my head off when I was uploading the pic. I left it that way cuz I thought it was an omen.

Reconnecting with old friends and picking up where we left off as if we never knew each other had gone out of our lives. Without my dear friends who are there to lend an ear of support don't think I could keep doing what I do. Love you all to bits and bits!

.."the beauties are my children...watching the waves roll in, finding heart shaped rocks along our walk...mostly its the ability to sometimes see what others wont stop long enough to look at and enjoy.."

nature, music that evokes strong emotion and sometimes sung by someone with such an amazing voice - jeff buckley, and people sharing their feelings and being vulnerable and being themselves, and people with beautiful hearts and personalities.
there are many many many more things i find beautiful..but right now, this is enough.

Watching a beautiful sunset sink into the ocean with a warm breeze and a cold drink in hand. Our whole planet is beautiful. If only all the people could get along. Settle their differences without killing one another.
