FAQ: Can't post to a thread? - How to Start A Thread Page 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
I'm curious as to why it might be that I can post to threads except for one...which simply does not allow for it (hit the button, goes to the list of threads, my post disappears).

just curious...

How To Start A Thread / Reply / Edit Your Posts

  1. Look at the list of sub forum categories from the main POF Forum here --> Main POF Forum List Page.

Click on one that strikes your interest and then examine all the discussion threads going on.

You could also click on the on Canada or USA for your local list of sub Provincial or State Sub Forums from the above same page and pick a Province or State.

For example click on the Relationship Forum and scan the topics.

  2. If you have a topic in mind that you would like to start, please search first using the FORUM Thread Search Tool, because if it's been posted before, you should join that discussion, no matter how old the thread is, unless it's an advice subject very specific to your situation.

If you start a redundant topic, or do not adhere to the Posting Guidelines, chances are it will be deleted.

  3. If you can't find one, then click on this button, , top left hand corner, and away you go.

  4. Don't forget to give your thread a valid subject line that reflects its contents, so that others can search to see if it's been posted already.

  5. If you only want to reply to the thread subject, just click on this icon and type your reply/post into the blank area, then click the post button. Your reply will go to the end of the thread regardless of which post you click reply on.

... and please, don't post a reply to a thread that has zero relevance to that thread's subject. Every thread has a specific subject.

  6. If you want to reply to a specific post in a thread, do the same as above, except it would be helpful if you quoted portions of the passage you are replying to because as previously mentioned, all replies go to the end of the thread and it may not seem obvious to everyone, what or whom you are replying to, without quoting the passage/post you are replying to.

  7. "Quoting" simply means copying a part of the passage you are replying to, into your reply and distinguishing it in such a way, so that the audience can discern the quoted passage versus your reply. An example on how to quote HERE.

In either case, when you do click on the post reply button, you will note that whichever post you are replying to. its contents will be presented to you, above the reply area so that you can readily copy and paste portions of it for quoting purposes.

  8. To Edit Your Post For new Members, your Profile has to have been in Existence for at least 72 Hours, and at least 8 - 10 Posts are required first before the (Edit Post) Function becomes available to you. As long as you are Forum Logged-in, you can "edit" your Post for up to 15 Minutes after you have posted your Forum Message

  9. Read The Posted Rules Prior To Posting

    Forum Posting Guidelines
    Acceptable Use & Posting Rules

how 2 post a new thread?
Posted: 8/3/2007 7:37:35 AM
I want to post a new thread "Artists dating artists experiences" and cannot seem to start it. I did search the threads and it isn't in there. I don't seem to have a "new thread" button. Is there a particular page that would appear on, am I blocked from that, or is there something elusive that I'm not aware of? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Combine msg 4 and 7!

Click on the words "Main Forum List Page" in msg 4 or 7! That will take you to a list of all the Main Forum Catagories!

When you decide which one strikes your interest, or the one your thread should be listed under based on the topic.....click on it to open it up.

Next, click where it says "New Thread" on the top left side of the page.

"Don't forget to give your thread a valid subject line that reflects its contents."

"Use the thread search facility found in the upper right to ensure the thread hasn't been done to death already and you should be fine. Just make sure the thread has a valid topic for discussion or debate."

Now where did I hear that before?

I believe it is a matter of the three day waiting period. You are allowed to post here but not in other threads. Probably the problem will disappear as soon as the clock ticks over to the time today that marks your full three days?

ok i have tried to post about 30 threads.none have come up so

You won't be making any new Threads. You don't search for existing ones on a given Topic, but create Redundant ones. Thus your Privilege to make New Threads has been revoked.

Make another 5 Posts, then let Midnight PST pass and they should be there on your Profile by Morning.

Umm according to the instructions on this thread, there's supposed to be a 'post new thread' button? upper left corner? No such button anywhere on my screen. What now?

Did you pick a Sub Forum first? e.g. Relationship Forum

Then you will see the following, with the New Thread button in the upper left ?

I just read over those instructions again. It sounds like I'm going about trying to start a new thread right. However, The last few times after having typed up an entry with a subject, I never saw it posted after clicking on post. I'm still new too this forum stuff. Could someone please tell me, why it does not seem to want too work for me?

Once you are 'in' the forum you want to start a new thread in, you should see the new THREAD button at the upper left, just above the list of threads in that forum.

If you are wanting to reply, or 'post' to an existing thread, then, once you are 'in' the thread you should see the post reply button at the bottom of every post. Clicking on any one of them will allow you to post to the thread, with your post appearing at the end, that is, last in the thread.

I'm wondering though, if you are running into trouble trying to post in the 'Ask a Girl' or 'Ask a Guy' forums?
The threads in those forums are limited to 20-ish replies, so if you're trying to post as the thread nears that limit... well, you may be wasting your time.
Likewise, if you're trying to start a new thread in the 'Ask a Guy' forum you're also wasting your time, because only women can start threads in that forum.

Here's a couple of handy links... relating to forums.

And to the site in general. Most of the questions you will ever have can be answered by careful reading of the information you'll find here.

Hello. When I was new to this forum talk, I made two new threads before. Why can't I post new threads now? Did you or someone do something? I got one reply to one, that it was deleted, and to read the rules. I did read the rules prior. However, theres lots too read and make sense of. I reposted a similar thread, and don't know what happened too it.

Well, I had done some searching. I did not find one that seemed similar at the time. So, when they remove the ability, is it indefinate?

The only thing that I could think of that would prevent you from posting in "Profile Reviews" would be if you have previously created a thread in that category.

You are only allowed 1 thread per user in that forum.

Can a thread (or maybe an individual user) be set to less than 5 posts? In one current thread, I was given a maximum posts message, and I only have 2 posts in the thread (I figure there is the possibility deleted posts count against you as well, but I don't have any memory of making any other posts in that thread besides the 2 I currently see and the thread is pretty new for me to be forgetting my participation in it already).

Threads can be unilaterally set to between 2 and 5 posts permanently or temporarily depending on resources. This is done for threads that are borderline viable and to curb repeated monopolisers who simply bump the thread with posts that have no merit. 5 posts should be sufficient to add one's views. Unfortunately this may affect some who are decent contributors, but we simply don't have the resources to continually monitor for uncivil, non contributory, and non constructive posts.

Posters can also be put on a "diet" of 5 or 10 posts per day, or a loss of thread creation rights as a signal. If this signal isn't clued into, then further sanctions will be imposed until they do get it.

Case in point with the latest round of threads that are attracting more than their fair share of posts that are simply non constructive and insulting.

I would rather see individual forums or threads banned from persistent borderline "light" trollers, rather than have to limit the thread for all.

Not sure about the user but I am pretty sure that some threads can be set with a lower number of posts per user.
