Supplements, do we really need them?
Posted: 3/15/2007 6:37:50 AM
i've seen excellent results with a combination that includes blueberry leaves, eleuthero, yarrow, uva ursi, dandelion root and fenugreek. you can use it along with any other supplements or any medications. you need to use it consistently, though. it may not kick in right away. i always tell people 'we don't develop these problems overnight, we can't heal them overnight.'

As far as I know, most natural remedied have had very little clinical testing. So the evidence is mainly anecdotal. Certain breathing exercises are thought to reduce blood pressure such as alternatively breathing in one nostril, holding your breath and breathing out the other nostril. Herbs such as ginko biloba, white elm (from which aspirin is derives) are known to thin the blood. Aspirin, of course, has been proven to do that. Relaxation also helps.

Calling BS on the above statement. Most pharma meds came from natural sources and have been synthesized and have been part of the materia medica in the past with well documented effects. Can you say that the herbs used in Chinese medicine haven't been clinically tested even though they are part of a 4500 year old written text? That's a hell of a lot of clinical testing eh? The main ingredient in aspirin comes from many places.

High doses of Vit C did not save Linus Pauling, the Nobel Prize winning scientist who originally advocated the high doses of Vit C. Linus Pauling died of CANCER despite his high use of Vit C so before you go throwing out the good benefit of these things you should look at the facts.

Matter of fact you'd love the DVD I am watching as I type this, Morgan Spurlocks 30 days, specifically the anti-aging episode #2 on the disc, first one. They stuck this guy on all these supplements and it took no time at all before his liver functions came back as below normal. These are all legal and their administration is overseen by an american doctor

yes Linus Puling died of prostate cancer -at 93 & 1/2 years old, far older than the vast ajority of Americans make it to.. older than probably 90% of the posters here will make it to.

Yes I know one. I have high blood pressure (HBP) 180/120 untreated. Anyway I noticed when I fixed dried large Lima beans for dinner, next day or two I could skip my meds. I kept testing it and it gets my BP down to like 140/90 for at least one day, especially if I didn't eat any other fried or salty foods, but always helped. So I would suggest Dried Large Lima Beans because they have 600mg of natural potassium in every serving. (4,700mg RDA). Prepared as suggested on pkg with not too much salt only 1 teaspoon per 1lb bag, I add 2 tablespoons garlic for flavor. They're found in the dried bean section of the grocery store, 1" long, white in color and shaped like a letter "C".

A nurse told me It doesn't do any good to take potassium unless you take magnesium 1st, because magnesium lets the body "hold on" to the potassium, otherwise it just goes in one door and out the other. (25 mg RDA)

I'd keep it simple and use the apple cider vinegar- Bragg brand- each am before food. Eat a healthy diet and look at the stressors in your life.
Personally, I'd use garlic 4000 mg daily and/ or add natural garlic to my diet. It has too many properties and positive actions to list. Read up on it if you have interest. Buy a good quality form at a health food store. Always read the precautionaries on anything you use / the levels you use , especially on any meds, and talk to your dr. about it.

Drink green tea hun. When ever you can. Try eating soy products too!

Everything in moderation. Some green teas contain too much fluoride and not only can that be toxic, it can tinker with the thyroid by the fluoride replacing the iodine ( a very general physiological description) if the iodine levels are depleted or deficient.

Soy products contain natural estrogen and should be used in moderation.

This is a very interesting topic.

I'm 55, I struggled with high blood pressure for years. Took the meds. Kept needing stronger ones. Ultimately, they stopped working. My BP is fine now.

Everybody is looking for a magic bullet, there is none. The main thing is moderate exercise. Walking 30 minutes , three times a week. You don't have to become a triathlete. But being more active in general helps. Drink lots of water. Cut down on the salt intake. Eat more fresh food. Do something you love once in a while, Even if it's just taking a day off a going fishing with a good friend.

It may not work for everyone, but it worked for me.

The dreaded BP curse! I tried a year ago to go off meds. I ate every friggin high potassium food item including potatos, sweet potatos, parsnips, bananas, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, plums, chia seeds ....you name it, it was incorporated in my daily smoothie or lunch and dinner. The doctors are puzzled. At 5'4 and fluctuate between 105 and 110 pounds, very active lifestyle, the diet should kick in to keep me off the meds but it didn't work. For me it is my family gene pool. It is what it is. I've accepted it could be worse and take a blood pressure pill every day for maintenance. I'll take this over other health issues that could be much worse.

Sweetness you may want to try the kyolic aged garlic extract .Not so smelly
They have benefited ME.
I take it for other reasons but it will reduce blood pressure.

Also olive leaf extract I take to ward off colds ect. It helps with blood pressure and cholesterol.

They have many studies on ( kyolic) but it does cost a bit more. They have one called immune formula that has o leaf in it also.
I get the cardiovascular one.

Have them send you a brochure with the stats on each formula.

You can also get garlic mixed with parsley fairly cheap which helps with blood pressure also and breath if thats a concern.
The parsley works as a diuretic.

My blood pressure is on the low/normal side naturally but if you take in the cayenne.,co q10, olive leaf, magnesium and garlic I take. It is really loooooow.LOL

* wave*

You're not old.

I get my potassium from bananas, beans, spinach, nuts and potatoes with skin. You cant hurt yourself with food forms but can taking a supplement form.
I think heart damage is the most serious, some numbness, so he is def right.

Have used pill dispensers for herbs and spices for 15 years myself.

I can direct you to a good source for the garlic supplements if you like.

As a nurse I find this a disturbing thread.

Don't want to take BP medication because it is expensive? ....you may drop dead tomorrow from a stroke. ..or be irreversibly damaging arteries, your heart, etc. Better to spend money on the medication than anything else in life you spend money on. Get a health professional to check your blood pressure on a regular basis...don't rely on home or in-store testing machines. Those machines are fine as supplemental testing but don't depend on them.

There's nothing wrong with trying all these anecdotal foods, supplements, etc. Most are worthless but fortunately don't do any harm. TAKE YOUR MEDICATION.

Less stress, diet, salt reduction weight loss, etc. rarely bring BP down significantly. They are fine in border line cases but that's it.

RUN from anyone who says drinking or eating 'A' or 'B' lowered BP numbers more than a couple numbers. Claims to lower BP significantly are total baloney. That iclude apple cidar vinegar, vitamin c, garlic, etc. If you have high blood pressure just remember that it is slowly but surely killing you. Controlling it may be the difference from dropping dead at 65 or living to be an active 90 ( a 90 year old with good circulation and all the benefits to the body and mind that go with this).

Read the title of the thread..Natural remedies.

Most of us have used or tried these things or know many who have, many will NOT even go to a Dr. and my own
Dr. suggests magnesium and weight control before medication if not dangerously high..

I am pretty sure I said
Do not combine with medication unless you are weaning off under a Drs care

Funny Drs prescribe warfarin ( rat poison) to thin blood but yet the same will tell you NOT to take vit e, garlic, ginger and other natural substances before surgery because it thins the blood.

Had a nurse tell me I needed fluoride in my water to be healthy..so..whatever

NO ONE said do NOT see a doctor. We addressed the question.

As a (holistic) practitioner it makes me nuts when people self-medicate or gain info on their own and toy at taking care of it on their own, or do nothing when they have a serious condition.
If you're going to go the natural way and do it without the supervision of a dr.,,, read Michael Murray's books and use his formulated products. I still wouldn't toy with it on your own, having HBP and diabetes. You can control them, and keep them under control with a good diet and routine care that is holistic, but it will always need care IMO.
Some diabetics can lose weight and they will no longer need meds if they are non-insulin dependent, but they still need to monitor this condition.
You don't know what you're doing if you're taking double iron. Not only is that not safe, the over-use of iron supps can promote the causal symptoms of diabetes, trigger issues with it, etc.
A person doesn't take fiber to buffer vitamin C to avoid Vitamin C flushing. They find the right amount of C for their system, without taking too much of it.
You need to see a dr about all of this IMO.
You can see a holistic dr. and find a regimen of diet, exercise and supplements that will help you for the long haul, adjusting them over time as needed.

There does seem to be a common vitamin c bowel tolerance level in mega doses as with magnesium citrate also.
C should be in doses no more than 500 mg with bioflavinoids ( some do need a buffered form) and start with twice a day up to bowel tolerance when mega doses are advised.
C is an anti stress vitamin in large doses.

Sweetness
Magnesium citrate is an anti stress mineral and should be taken in 2-3 doses throughout the day also for best results.
Not usually recommended for those with kidney issues, bowel issues, myasthenia gravis, or heart block.
Very common to use for stress/muscle tightness/myalgia/tension and migraine headaches/high blood pressure/constipation.

The citrate form is highly absorbable and comes in a powder form you mix with warm water that shows visible and physical results often within 15 minutes in most people if taken correctly.

Always discuss with your Dr if on medications ( or pharmacist who may actually be trained MORE in adverse interactions)

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR IS A MIRACLE ( i went from 200 / 125 down to 140 / 90 in 4 weeks !!! )

How stupid

1. No it didn't bring your blood pressure down that much

or

2. If it did, then it is stupid to consume anything so potent to your body. Your cardio-vascular system is dangerously out of whack and you need majory attention.

The only sound advice so far is to see your doctor and follow his advice.

Funny Drs prescribe warfarin ( rat poison) to thin blood but yet the same will tell you NOT to take vit e, garlic, ginger and other natural substances before surgery because it thins the blood.

That's a sweeping generalisation without any context.

I've never heard of surgeons telling people to stop garlic/ginger before surgery.

As for Warfarin- unless it was very minor surgery, most surgeons do stop warfarin pre-operatively. For a soft indication like atrial fibrillation, it would be stopped a few days before so that your INR (measure of warfarin effect) is back to normal. For people with prosthetic heart valves, warfarin would be stopped and usually replaced with a heparin infusion (another blood thinner), which is easier to switch off/on again, as it has a faster onset than Warfarin.

Why care about your blood pressure if you don't care where or how your food was raised. It'd be like dumping sewage in your gas tank, then praising the guy who invented a pill you could throw in with it to get your car to run on it. #1 prescribed pill worldwide is statins, longest living people on earth live where there are no doctors.

True. We moniter Warfarin (Coumadin) use daily. The use of Coumadin is a close collaboration between your GP, cardiologist, and front line health contacts (nurse, blood monitoring, pharmacist). A surgeon is very aware of it's use and will consult with a specialist before any decision is made to alter a regimen. There is no casual decisions made about the use, continual use or stopping of Warfarin.

Since this has turned into a blood thinner thread.
Explain the people with purple bruises all over their arms, legs and hands from its use. RAMPANT esp in nursing homes and people over 65 that go see a doctor 4-6 times a month.

"WE" as in the whole medical community of doctors? No they don't.

Yes, I would know.

Why dont you add to the real topic of the thread?
Natural remedies for high blood pressure.

Because "we" aren't informed?
Hell my kid knows petting a dog will help lower it.
