'Wee One'

At station stop along the line
Parents sent off 'wee one' so fine
Blonde of hair perhaps only four
Parents unable to care for no more.

Scared a bit and excited too
'Wee One" began Her journey true
Protected here on comfort train
Through innocence expossed Her pain.

Tears in private among the crew
Comradeship in protection grew!
Snuggled sweet in berth asleep
All crew to Her protection keep.

At destination to leave the train
Tears expressed the parting pain
To distant relative true
Blue....blue...sky blue.

'Next Stop....'

Conductor calls in monotone
Stops in his mind a clone
Cities towns all the same
Travelling has been the game.

Conductor calls in monotone
Thinking where is exactly home?
'Tis not the domicile on file
Has not been there in quite a while.

Without the train conductor lost
Soul wind whipped on ocean tossed
'Next Stop.....rear exit please.'
Train slows...stop. Patrons release.

All Aboarrrd!

'Miles o' Smiles'

Union Station hour twenty three fifty nine
'Super Continental' name train of the line
Snuggled blanket upper berth sheets of starch
Eased out of station beginning westward march.

Rythm of the rails from excitement could not sleep
Alas it was an upper berth and from no window I could peep
Train eased into Cochrane and I got up to seek relief
Stepping squarely unto back of passenger to embarrassed greif.

On the morrow with bed of berth Porter folded away
Conversation with young lady enjoyed in the light of day
To dining car at dinner together did we dine..
Was there that I experienced my first taste of wine.

New found friend and I we chatted invited to lounge car
Enjoyed first taste of rum an' coke....conversation travelled far.
At crew change point on prairie scheduled stop a while
Made lengthy walk to head end engine view to smile.

Engine crew well seasoned pleased to see young lad
Invited me aboard the cab! Man! My heart was glad!
Shaking like an earhquake when throttle open eased
Such power strength and might thrill my heart most pleased!

Rocking swaying gently at eighty three miles an hour
The bell I rung and whistle blew to thrilling sense of power!
Winding through the 'Rockies' such thrill One has to see
Pictures do no justice to that experience One has to be!

Disembarking at Vancouver on pacific shore
Was journey on the train that I desired more!
The week spent on the West Coast time went by so slow...
'Till I could board the train again..with my heart aglow!

'Westbound 667'

Young lad of but fourteen
In station to the 'crew room'
Crew list desired seen.

When roster listed 'Humble'
Conductor friend of mine
Heart within did rumble!

With always pleasant greeting!
Cap tilted upon head
Thrilled chance of meeting!

Boarded train with conductor
Young lad with heart thrill
No ticket needed for!

Westbound six six seven
Dayliner rode in cab
Little taste of heaven...

Remote the village domicile
No longer station stop
For young Lad's smile....

Kind Conductor 'Mel'
Stop "Dayliner"
It was swell!!!!

In respected memory of Mister Mel Humble: Conductor, Canadian National Railway.

'Companions'

Relaxing in domed lounge car
Trip yet not travelled far
Passengers thus gathered share
Stories of emotion care.

That is but the magic
Sharing glad and tragic
In gentle rythm of the rail
Each to set their heart asail!

Locomotive headlight shine
Illuminate unknown on the line
Patrons relaxed to share felt heart
Comfort growing from journey's start!

This imaginary poet train of length
With each mile gathers strength
Resembles train trip reality
Sharing joys of memory!

Headlamps of poetic thought shine brightly! Appreciation expressed to all!

'Beauty of Steam'

Electro-motive was the dream
Giant Oil and Motor scheme
Quiet progress steady sure
Politicians did procure.

Steam locomotive dinosaur
Fossil fuels consumed galore
Diesel powered did replace
Until automobiles entered race.

'King Coal' defeated long ago
Electro-motive same fate bestow
Giant Oil and Motor dream
Such Kingdom now is seen....

Reality of that seen today
Is tommorow's yesterday
Awesome to see driving wheel
Powered by steam on steel!

Allure of such power expose
Skill of pride craftsmen those
Toiled there for heart and soul
Glad I do not have to shovel coal!

Welcome aboard!

When trains derailed, a 'Section Gang' of men led by the 'Section Foreman' was dispatched to restore the line.

Communications on the railroad were encouraged to be brief. After numerous admonishments with regard to his lengthy dispatches, section foreman 'Sean Finnigan', having accomplished the task, telegraphed:

'Off again. On Again. Finnigan.'

'Crossing'

Jack Johnson locomotive engineer
Morning train stopped at crossing clear
"'Morning Jack!" crossing guard would hail
Health of wife and kids inquired without fail.

Ol' Jack for years became accustomed to that line
Donned in new overalls cap and scarf so fine
Not recognized Jack clothed in oufit new
Guard inquired "Why not Jack of engine crew?"

Smiling quietlty to himself think game to play
Retorts engineman " Jack has taken a holiday!"
Guardman spits. "That useless****"
"What a worthless spineless prick!"

'Ol Jack was quite ataken back
Donned in old garb to confirm attack
Next run descend the engine true
Crossing guard hailed as custom due...

Twas heard You talked 'bout when I was off
The guardsman spit and then scoffed
'Who told You that is a dirty liar!'
'Say! How's the wife an ol' home fire?'

'Signals'

Before the days of cellphone
Trains on one steel ribbon alone
Telegraphed typed orders read aloud
Safety sought job of each member proud.

Orders there agreed upon halt Westbound 69
At station stop called 'Acton' to Express of the line
Conductor in agitation at 'Express' thus late
Inquired of the agent as to telegraph fate.

Dispatched to do such bidding agent did just so
Conductor signalled 'Highball' so the train would go...
Engineman named 'Kelly' conscientiousness true
Asked of his Fireman if orders perception construe.

Conductor angered at cab side began to shout
Engineman most nervous to begin journey about
In the heat of argument a little light did shine....
Nothing but the headlight of Express of the line.

When wind of passing express thundered past
Ashen thoughts made impression upon to last
Vivid thought of possible for not two assent
All are humbled in shallowness moment spent.

True anecdotes of railway lore....

'Twilight of Steam'

Dinosaurs headlight of bright
Seething scary steam delight
Cared for by many nation wide
'Though gone remembered with pride.

Children steam whistle never heard
'Thomas Tank Engine' are allured
Union Pacific's massive 'Big Boy'
Southern Pacific's 'Daylight' joy.

True in the sense of progress
Such behemoths make no sense..
Porters ghost on platform bare..
Brass buttonned conductors receive no fare..

Dining car with chef prepare
Bare white tabled cloth to no one there
Wisps are there smiling in memory
Inviting those on poetic journey!

Forget worries progress strife
Aboard imaginary escape of 'life'
Painted 'Daylight' sunset colour
Sante Fe 'Super Cheif' or other.

Welcome aboard!

This train travels on!
