Poor kid :(Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
Does anyone have any suggestions (aside from the cough syrup that doesn't help) on how to calm a nasty cough in children?

I have taken my daughter, (shes 4) to the Dr. and he says just to let her cough it out. I wish he would pay attention to the fact that she has been in his office a minimum of 6 times this year alone all because of what seems to be a 'chronic cough'.
She was hospitalized in January with pneumonia after being sent home from the emergency room, the Dr.'s office, the local walk in- all of them telling me she just had a 'cough due to cold'. I can't dispute now that it could be from a cold, but she is getting no more than maybe 5 minutes relief between coughing fits.
She had been on inhalers when they thought she was asthmatic(they aren't sure though) the inhalers help not at all-if anything they make it worse.

Any tips or home remedies?

I'm at my wits end with helping my poor babe.

Lots of clear liquids and a humidifer. Cough medicine is tricky in kids (it doesn't always work). If she is coughing that much and it's been going on awhile, you may want to get a second opinion. Is she allergic to anything (pets, plants, smoke, or such)?

I agree, get a second opinion if you're having more hospital visits due to it. for congestion cough, I use vapor bath, vapor plug to make the room have that menthol smell to it, that helps a bit with breathing, but a vaporizor would work just as fine or a humidifier.

I read somewhere to put vick vaporub on the bottoms of the feet and cover with socks before going to bed. Don't know if it works or not, I'm waiting for the annual month long winter colds to come along so I can try it.

Thanks guys for all the replies.
We have tried the steamy bathroom it helped for a little bit, until we left that is lol....she started again almost immediately after. Humidifiers don't help her much either. Seems that cold helps more than warm air.

I have asked her where the cough is coming from and she has indicated her throat. Her chest is clear so I can believe it being her throat. I think perhaps its more of a post nasal drip that is tickling and making her cough til she gags.

Her dad put Vicks Vapo rub on her chest last time she had this nasty cough, he said it made the coughing fit worse. She didn't stop coughing until he had washed the stuff off her chest. Makes me cautious about putting it on the bottoms of her feet (though I have heard as well that this works). She doesn't react well to scented stuff.

Last night I bought some saline drops to put in her nose in hopes that it will help break down the mucus that seems to be coating the back of her throat. Then I bundled her up in her warmest PJ's and opened her bedroom window about an inch. She slept a lot sounder than she has for a week. The cough is horrible again this morning :(

The thing about getting second opinions- when she was a baby she had the same cough we were referred to a pediatrician and he put her on nasal spray and 2 inhalers. Said she had asthma. Tested her for allergies, when none of his treatments worked he told me there was nothing more he could do for us. (turned out then that we had black mold growing in our house)
We moved to B.C. I was secretly hoping the climate would be enough to help her, it hasn't been. I have kept a journal during the Spring, Summer ad Fall months regarding air quality, weather, pollen reports all in hopes that we could figure out whats causing this.
Again any Doctor we have seen here won't look any farther than to listen to her lungs and tell me shes fine-if I push for it, they will put her on an antibiotic. I don't like her being on them so I don't push too hard unless she has been fighting the cough for over a week.

I guess it will just continue to be trial and error to help the poor muffin.

have the doctors took a look at her tonsils? maybe that's causing the coughing? I don't know how it works there, but could you take her to a different facility whatnot, cuz maybe they are trained a certain way whether than look at different aspects. I know when I was a teenager, I knew something was wrong because my hands kept shaking, but my health insurance at the time, the doctor i went thru it says it was nothing. years later i had a different healthcare insurance and the doctor i went thru told me I had a thyroid disease. so if you can, go to a different place. Perhaps if you have lived in that house with the mold, ,it could be a longtime effect that's causing the coughing.

Yes, take better care of her and make her go to bed on time!

Thanks for setting me straight. I was unaware that my childs chronic cough, the one where she doesn't get 5 minutes to breath normally, makes her cough til she gags and gag til she either pukes or shits her self was due to my negligence. This same cough that has given her broken blood vessels under her eyes because she coughs so hard.
I will ensure that she makes it to bed on time to fix this problem.
What a great idea! Glad it came from someone who doesn't have nor want children.

I have taken her to the doctor-he said it was just a cold and that she will cough it out in 7-10 days. What a nice guy lol.

In PG doctors won't accept new patients if you already have a doctor in town, makes getting a second opinion very difficult. I will take her back to a walk in clinic in the next cpl of days if she is still not getting any relief.
Thanks everyone again for their advice....I have tried almost everything posted here with little to no success.

I noticed on your profile that you are an occassional smoker, which could be the problem if you are smoking a room/vehicle when your child is present. My two nephews both have chronic coughs, both of their parents smoke in the home and in the vehicle with the children. If medications are not helping, this could well be the problem. Best of luck!

When we lived in Alberta, the house we lived in had mold in all the bedrooms. We didn't discover the extent of the mold until we moved. There is of course where her cough started.
She hasn't had a bad cough for approx. 5 months. The cough that started this thread lasted another month before finally subsiding.
She seems to take any illness straight to her lungs ~ if she gets the tummy flu she coughs her guts out.
I have an appt with our GP to get started on her allergy tests. We tried them when she was way younger...but she was too young to get enough blood drawn from her itty bitty arms.

As to me smoking, I quit a yr ago or so just to see if it made any difference. After 3 months it didn't appear to affect her cough at all.
We have since gotten rid of all pets besides my fish tank and our poodle cross puppy.
We shall see what happens come fall.
