What is this pain in my jaw?! Is it TMJ?Page 1 of 1

I was fine all day and just a little while ago I started eating a bag of popcorn. Damn popcorn! All of a sudden I got this sharp stabing pain that went from my ear, just below my cheek bone and into my lower jaw.

I stopped eating the popcorn with reluctance of course

But now when I clench my teeth it feels weird right under my my jaw isn't screwed in right or something!

I swear people if you laugh I will have to hurt you..this may sound funny but I am in some serioius pain and want to hear from people who have TMJ. Is this what it feels like?

most of the muscular pain in our body occurs due to a jerk or by an unusual movement, i mean you incidently have jerked that is why you are feeling the pain, perhaps the winter chilling is also making it more worse, chech it out by the Dentist or the arthopadic specialist, sorry i am a doctor but not an arthopadic specialist or a dentist, otherwise i would have helped you more better in this connection,
remember some time gastric also create these tyes of problems, so check your diet

You may laugh at this but have you seen a chiropractor? Look on line for a Maximized living Chiropractor in your area.

If you sit at a computer, or play video games, etc. you may be sticking your chin out. Over time, this throws our neck out-of-alignment and can cause the pain you are talking of. I have written on other forums (chiropractor, inflammation) and tell about the pain I have been in and what I have been doing to "cure" it, not mask it with drugs.

I did have a little pain in my jaw, but my pain was mostly in my neck and chin. But, at my chiropractors office is a chart about "forward neck syndrome" and what it can cause and TMJ was listed there.

If I am trusting my chiropractor to care for my daugther's issues, rest assured that I am not steering you in the wrong direction....Let us all know if you take my suggestion and if it works!

I finally made it to the dentist and he said it was TMD..thanks for the correction to Hulah! I didn't know the right term I guess. I have just always heard it called TMJ.

Anyhow, I have had the same dentist for a long time and he said that he had never documented in my chart that I had a problem with clenching or grinding. He did say however he saw the "wear" patterns on my back teeth now that indicates I have been doing that probably not even realizing I am doing it. I have been under some stress lately so it makes sense. I even caught myself clenching my teeth the other day at work. He said all the tension from clenching can cause TMD and stress headaches.

He told me to take advil twice a day to reduce the swelling and to not eat anything to chewy for a few weeks to let it rest. He also explained how the jaw works and told me to avoid sleeping on my side. Something about when you lay on the side of your face and you swallow it puts pressure on that side and mimicks a grinding action. He did say too that if it doesn't get better he could make a bite plate that looks like a retainer to wear at night.

It feels a lot better than it did, I just couldn't believe something like that could cause so much pain! I hope I don't have another flare up!

You may laugh at this but have you seen a chiropractor?

I would never laugh at this! A few years back I had to go see a chiropractor and although I was really hesitant it helped me alot! To bad I moved 1 1/2 hr away from where he is.

Thanks for the advice everyone!!

here's the deal with tmj...

if you end up going to an orthodontist...and are diagnosed with tmj, you might get several different treatment options. The only thing that stinks is tmj is considered a "pre-existing condition" 99% of the time and most insurance companies wont pay for treatment, which can get expensive.

Some orthos will want you to wear an acrylic bite guard, which are molded and custom fit to your bite, and are sent to a lab to make. These can cost up to 2k, out of pocket. You might be offered electro stimulation therapy if your mandible is mal-aligned. You may even be asked to get an MRI. I spent thousands on my jaw, and mine actually locks up.

The best advice I can give you is, be skeptical of the dentists that suggest invisalign braces, (those clear braces). There was a major dental conference out in vegas a few years ago, and every dentist in the country is pushing them for tmj, (my opinion only).
Caffeine, nicotine, anything ending in ine (stimulants) will make you grind.

If you and your partner engage in oral activities below the waistline, and it is excrutiatingly painful for you, i would give a rain check. My jaw locked up after a night of wild....well, you get the point.

I take advil p.m. every night for the pain, and I've destroyed 3 custom bite guards. These people that are telling you to buy the cheap one's at the athletic stores are right on. They are inexpensive, and do the job. I just don't want to see someone pay thousands of dollars for something you can buy inexpensively.

Also, did the skin of the popcorn get stuck in your gums? Careful you don't get an infection. Is your body aligned? Doing some neck/shoulder/back stretches can relieve some of the tension. Is your workspace ergonomically suitable? Are you on the phone alot? A lot of things factor into where the pain originated. Try making some adjustments here and there, good luck, save your money!!! Hope you feel better!!!

My TMJ presents as constant tension in my jaw, with lots of popping if I rock my jaw or fully extend it (like when yawning). Sometimes I get the feeling you've described, along with pain when my jaw is closed or I'm chewing. I've had my jaw come out of alignment at times also, so that my teeth don't meet up properly.
I have TMJ as a result of stress-induced clenching, as well as damage from a dislocation... I have heard of Botox treatments for very severe TMJ, but it doesn't sound like your case is that bad

Yes, you have TMJ. In fact, you have a TMJ on both sides of your head. TMJ stands for the TemporoMandibular Joint, also called the jaw joint. The question you mean to ask is have I damaged my TMJ, by eating the popcorn. The answer, in my opinion is, yes. The question now is, what to do about it. By the way, I was a co-director of the TMJ Clinic, at the Univ. of Kentucky, Dental School, so I know a little bit about the subject.

Anyway, If you have a dental school nearby. Find out if they have a TMJ clinic, or occlusion division. If they do, go there. If they don't, let your fingers do the walking. Get out your yellow pages. Go to dentists. Now, look at the advertisements for TMJ Dentists. Find one you like and follow his/her treatment recommendations.

I hope the original poster found some relief, he's long gone and he posted that 8 years ago.
