Why should I believe in aliens?

I can say with some confidence that something 'big' is about to occur.

I feel, from what I see in my research, that something that has been in the collective groove for many years, something we have taken for granted, is about to fall off the turntable. It won't be accidental. It will be by design, by consent.

I keep getting something to do with a royal family, probably the British Royal Family. I am inclined to say, although I shouldn't stick my neck out so specifically, that the Queen is about to stand down as monarch. It will be something of that magnitude and import.

You were nearly right Peter.
It was the pope that stood down, not the queen. You'll be able to read about it when the mailboat turns up at whichever planet you live on.

Exodus 20:13 from a quick google search turns up many different versions of the verse that you quote.

You REALLY need to consider vanaheim's post (#40) before you "quote"

Planet Sedna (Sol system)

Nemesis? Last I heard, that was still only hypothetical. If they prove it exists it'd make things interesting being in a binary system (kind of) but because it's orbit is so exotic for its size, it'd only be in our vicinity a short while every 26 million years.

Who or what was around 26 million years ago to observe, record and calculate it's orbit?

The Privatization of Science

There IS a cure for cancer. I can't remember what its called but it is commercially available at the moment and has been for years. The problem is the rules and regulations require that it be clinically tested and go through all sorts of tests and research and stuff to allow its use in the treatment of cancer. This is the stumbling block. It currently costs $100M to go through all these tests etc and who will pay that much when they don't hold the patent. Once it is through the tests anyone can sell it as a cancer cure. But then again, as Ducky says, who wants to cure cancer?

^ With that being said I have a loaded question. Does anyone believe that man has turned away from the quest for spiritual awakening because of selfish greed (causing culture to advance today without religion)?

The relevance to this thread is that many posters have wailed and gnashed their teeth at how Christianity, as the predominant western religion, has fettered their freedom and obscured their pure morality with religiosity. Fair enough. However, the emerging secular utopia you dream of may face a far more single minded and less cooperative opponent.

Sharia law, anyone?

Anyone?

So your original question should have been "Can culture advance without Christianity?"

No, because our "moral" beliefs are based on religion (see the other moral/religious threads that seem to be de-rigeur at the moment). Any religion that has a "God created everything" belief would object.

it was common to take wives who were no older that 13 or so..... That was then, and I don't agree with a lot of what went on then.

This is getting down to the crux if the matter. As late as the middle ages in Europe, adult men, usually of means, were taking brides as young as 13 or even less. It was acceptable then but (quite rightly) not acceptable now. Moraly, modern nations have made laws stating an age of consent. The OP is pushing a question on biblical morality in to todays age. It doesn't scan.

As far as why YOU would want to live as a pre-christian Hebrew, that is your business, not mine

If you are pushing biblical religion onto me, that is exactly your business. Not just you but anyone that takes umbrage and tuts at my non religious ways.

not being either Hebrew or Jewish, I don't want to live as a post-christian Hebrew, which would explain why I don't see a real need to follow all 600 plus laws. I am relatively certain that most Jews today don't follow all 600 laws, and for certain, don't even know all 600 laws.

So you don't follow the rules of your religion but you expect atheists to?

600+ laws and none that specifically ban rape or pedophilia, but "Covet" covers it all? That's not what "scholars" define as covet.
Why would I want to live as a pre christian Hebrew? Do you follow ALL 600 plus laws?

Here's another thought for everyone to think about... the Piri Reis map composed in 1510 or so. How did that guy know what the shore line and underlying islands of Antarctica looked like if our science says that the entire continent has been under miles of ice for eons? They didn't have sonar back then, they didn't have drilling.... So how? He drew that map VERY accuratley.... Again, just something to consider.

The Antarctic coast line in the Piri Reis map bears more of a resemblance to the eastern coast of South America than Antarctica. If he was THAT good he would have done a better job of Ireland and Great Britain.

The great Global Rift is 65,000km

The Earth CIRCUMFERENCE around the poles is only 40,075.16 km. So where do you get your measurement from?

Hawaii isn't much older then the ocean floor around it.

Some of it is being created as I type. It's made by an active volcano and it forms a chain of islands because the plate that it sits on is moving.

two suns - any explanations?
Posted: 10/18/2011 10:09:24 AM
According to the bloke that invented the myth, Zecharia Sitchin, the Sumerians discovered Nibiru 3600 years ago. They did this with technology that is better than anything we have now. WE can't perceive it with all the telescopes, all the computing power, all of the knowledge and modern technology that we have at our disposal now. They deduced that Nibirus orbit around the sun is 3600 years, meaning that in 2012 it will make its closest approach to the earth causing disaster and mayhem in its wake, all using technology that left no archeological evidence. If that is the case, why didn't it cause disaster and mayhem 3600 years ago?

Its a hoax.

Time Travel-Is it possible?
Posted: 10/16/2011 9:17:05 AM

If time travel were possible there would be people coming back from the future to our current time or our past.

Not necessarily, people in the future might be disciplined enough not to make themselves known if they travel backwards in time. To quote an archeologist on UK TV's program "Time Team" "Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence".

You could argue that "it just hasn't been invented yet"

Any means of time travel that mankind might come up with might need a transmitter and receiver.

Just because we havn't met people from the future or can't conceive of a method to make it happen doesn't mean its not possible.

I would have thought getting back would be the easy part. All you would need to do is calculate where the Earth will be and perform a burn to leave L4 and let the Earth catch up to the ship. Calculating the trip to arrive and leave when the asteroid is on the Earths orbital plane.

Earths first Trojan in L4 has been discovered by WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer). Asteroid 2010 TK7 follows a dramatic, chaotic orbit. In theory it should be easier to reach a Trojan in L4 than to reach the moon. Do you think NASA will plan a manned mission?

Largest planet in the solar system could be about to be discovered - and it's up to four times the size of Jupiter

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 9:52 AM on 14th February 2011

Scientists believe they may have found a new planet in the far reaches of the solar system, up to four times the mass of Jupiter.

Its orbit would be thousands of times further from the Sun than the Earth's - which could explain why it has so far remained undiscovered.

continued in the link.

If it was 4 times the size of Jupiter would it noticeably affect the orbits of the known planets at the distance it is thought to be at? They call it Tyche at the moment but acknowledge they might need to change that. I wonder if some nut job will petition for it to be called Niburu

Is Faith an Intellectual Short Cut to the Big Answers?
Posted: 10/9/2010 3:57:13 PM
As a devout and practicing atheist I could take offence at the assumption that I am "mucking my way through my reality pondering, assessing, scrutinizing, discerning and ultimately deciding my own personal beliefs" but I choose not to. As you point out I have my own personal beliefs. They are mine. I don't force them on anyone else. I don't form armies to force my beliefs on others at the point of a sword. If someone doesn't agree with my point of view I don't ridicule him for his beliefs. He can believe in whatever he wants to be told to believe in, its his choice.

The answer to your question is Yes. It IS a shortcut to the Big Answers. They may not be the right answers, they may not be the Answers you would have concluded if you had pondered, assessed, scrutinized, discerned and ultimately decided your own personal beliefs. But if you are happy being told what to think then whoopie do to you. But don't use your book to tell me what to think.

US woman convicted of animal cruelty for piercing kittens gets 6 months of house arrest
Posted: 4/20/2010 2:54:57 PM

I agree with her defense...
Parents of very young children (I'm talking non-verbal, can't give consent in any way) children are allowed to get their ears pierced...this really isn't that much different IMO...as long as these animals weren't in pain from her modifications...why is a pet owner being punished for doing something done to children on a daily basis? We tattoo them and insert tracking chips, because we don't want them to get lost. Some of us dress them up and treat them like children, some of us even feed our pets better than we feed ourselves.

Personally, I think the animal rights movement has gotten a little ridiculous...there's more focus on cruelty to animals in our media than there is on starving and abused children IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. I think its truly shameful that as a society so many of us react to SPCA commercials and give support, while thousands of children go to school without breakfast, and sometimes even without a lunch, or other basic needs being met on a regular basis.

Just my $.02

Just turn this around. It's ok to do to an animal what you do to a child? So its ok to do to a child what you do to an animal. You would put down a sick animal.
