R&B

A question I have asked to people in the music industry more than once .....

The best answer I have got [ that makes sense ]
'Old R'n'B ' is as you say ' Rhythm and Blues'
'New R&B' should be read as 'Rhythm & BEAT '...

all very confusing if looking for the older style

The Beatles remastered on vinyl (stereo)
Posted: 11/29/2012 10:38:15 AM
why the heck does anyone listen to vinyl anymore? I'm sorry, but well mastered CD's destroy vinyl in every listening aspect
- most audiophiles, engineers and DJ's would disagree with that, its all about analog bandwidth.....

Add to that the recordings that aren't available on CD - or any other electronic thingy

and they sound & feel better !

The Beatles , nope not a single record by them [ did buy Hey Jude on release tho ]

the obvious place to start is with Miles Davis - Kind of Blue album from 1959 ,

agree about the terminology - smooove jazz is more 'lift music'
Cool Jazz is more Chet Baker etc

Thanks Drestin.Red , very interesting read .

Re - Jody , I know friends and myself over here in the UK have been mildy bemused by the use of Jody as a male name [ as in Johnny Taylor's record , Jody got your girl and gone] , and just put it down to 'one of them odd americanisms' lol ....

your Great Great Aunts reminicenses probably help show how deeply ingrained [?] the African Griot tradition was back then , I'm guessing - but the farm hands would have been several generations away from original African slaves ?

Credit Ratings Agencies

I'm pleased to see that I am not the only person scratching their head about these so called 'independent' credit rating agencies , are we really expected to believe that in this era of high speed connectivity that there is NO interlinking between credit agencies /hedge funds/ institutuinal [sp] lenders ?

its worth baring in mind that 8% interest gets some 'independent investor' 4 times as much back per annum as a 2% return !!!!

obviously there would be NO temptation to spread 'information' through well hidden channels

Gotta love Elmore James eh - Madison Blues is a personal fav ! [ and Sunnyland]

over here in southern England its not uncommon for R'n'B , Rockabilly, Ska & early soul to be played together at clubs ...

not sure if the same applies in USA ???

does lead to an 'interesting' mix of folks at a do - soulies, skins, rockabillies and students all mixed together

one of their less 'contraversial' tunes ------ Birds Word

ha ha ha , as soon as i switched of the laptop last night, the lightbulb shone !
pre 1951 'rap' ?
try these
Louis Jordan , - Beware Brother, Beware 1946 ....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl3XTX8JnQo&feature=related

One of many many tunes - and reading his Wiki entry , there is a claim to originating Rap music !
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Jordan
ok so lets pre-date that ?
the mighty Cab Calloway !!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D44pyeEvhcQ&feature=related
Reefer Man - just for the hell of it !!! - his best known recording 'minnie the moocher' was 1931 !

Who was the first Rap Artist?
Posted: 3/25/2011 12:48:33 PM
Ok, this is only my opinion - but to find the first rap record , we need to find an already existing recording that has been 'redone' with more than just 'pepping' over the top of it , but still spoken rather than 'sung'
In Jamaican Music ,its often considered to be Jack Of My Trade by Sir Lord Comic in 67[ish!] .....
ok, that makes Rap a recorded/dancehall/radio style rather than live bands IMO - but you may well differ in opinion !

Ps - if we get into 'Live' then Hoedown Shouters [if thats what the're called?] would have a good claim !

Who was the first Rap Artist?
Posted: 3/25/2011 11:35:14 AM
first off - it depends on what is considered 'Rap' - for instance Millie Jackson was well known for her Raps in the early/mid 70s .
Gil scott Heron - The revolution will not be televised , 1971 was a Rap record , also plenty by the Last Poets from the same era ....

But , and its a big 'but' - they are recorded on new backing tracks .....

If 'true' Rap is using already existing riddims - we get to artists like U Roy , not the first , but probably the most influential Jamaican 'Toaster' , recordings from 1969 over old Rocksteady tunes .
Check out 'Wear you to the Ball' by the Paragons - then his version [both easy to find on YT ] ...
Where did he get his inspiration from ? --- Radio Dj's on Southern US soul stations .
and this where things get murky ! for an example , check Jerry O , Karate Boogaloo for an idea of what what was possible [but afaik -its a 'unique' riddim ]
So - the Big Bopper was a dj as well - interesting eh !

i saw the machine a few weeks ago . checked it over , and nowhere on it does it mention a charge for using it - until you use it !!!

I'm not expecting the service to cost nothing[3-4%maybe] , but we [my kids & I] took all the coppers from the seperate 1p , 2p , 5p etc , put them in some bags - mixed up by then [lesson learnt] and popped down .

What angers me so - the simple fact they wont tell what the charge is till activated !!

Ps - it was over £100 - with nearly £10 in charges !!!

Hows about this one - Dirty old Man , The Three Degrees .

Dirty
you are a dirty ol' man
You can't keep your hands to yourself.
You are a dirty ol' man
Go mess around with somebody else.

That I've done told you
You can look but please don't touch.
Cause you don't understand what I mean
Can't you see I'm not old engough.
You say that ain't ain't nothing but a number-number
You're much too experienced for me.
Oh all you wanna do is take my love
AII you want is another victory.

Dirty ol' man you can't keep . . .

Next time you see me
You can speak but please don't stuck
Cause I believed every word you said
And here I am with a broken heart.
You won your game now
Don't waste it on a date
No
no
no
no cause you're a married man
And I'm still free.
Oh all you wanna do is take my love
AII you want is another victory.

Dirty ol' man . . .

I'm sure there's many a lass on here who thinks that
