Funny, but real names...
Posted: 4/14/2008 12:09:33 AM
In defense of the Hoggs (two Gs). I grew up in Texas and the story I heard was that they wanted their daughters to be able to make it on their own without relying on their family name, so when asked their names at social functions, they would just give their first names.

Ura isn't so bad, but Ima is just mean.

I think it's outrageous that the judge admitted $250 million was "extravagant" but saw no problem with giving her $50 million.

And women wonder why successful men don't want to get married......

1 In 4 Teen Girls Have a STD In US
Posted: 3/17/2008 2:11:51 PM

Here we see the result of the promiscuity and permissiveness advocated by the political left.

We all know about Bob Foley (R), Ted Haggard (Bush's "Spiritual adviser) Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho) as examples of right-wing "morality".

Now meet Glenn Murphy Jr. (aka The Midnight Fellator), former "Head" (get it) of the Young Republicans of America.

Exactly. If a teenager acted like that with his colleagues at school, he would be expelled or worse. But we expect less self-control and dignity from our politicians than we do from your average junior high student.

And those same politicians are the ones who love to posture about "maintaining the dignity of their office."

I think from now on, instead of addressing letters to our congressional representatives as "The Honorable" Senator Foghorn (eg), we should all just address them "Dear SOB".

Lesson 1: It's true. If an would-be abductor would harm or even kill you in a public parking lot just imagine what they will do to you when they get you secured in a place of their choosing. You have nothing to lose by fighting back in that situation.

Lesson 2: Surveillance cameras are everywhere. Some people (stupid criminals) just don't get it.

Too true. It's been my experience that you can't win with these women. No matter what you say or do they will find a way to misinterpret it.

Another fatal crime: Bringing her flowers the first time you meet. She will inevitably view that as proof positive you are some kind of a creep. Of course, Ted Bundy could probably get away with that, but the rest of us are screwed for even thinking of it......and not in a good way.

That movie 'supersize me'
Posted: 1/25/2007 11:39:35 PM
First of all, I will say that fast food is notoriously unnutritious relative to its caloric content.

However, it was apparent from the movie that the guy who made it set out to purposely gain weight. He ordered multiple burgers and large fries and took it upon himself to have a large soda with every meal and order the largest "meals" offered. A person who set out to purposely pig out the way he did could have done as much damage to himself at the local grocery store.

Posted: 1/25/2007 11:00:50 PM
Compared to the US government, they are rank amateurs at running up red ink.

But seriously, much of the "gains and losses" reported on company reports aren't really cash losses so much as they are "book losses" generated by standard accounting practices such as depreciation and amortization that reflect investments made years ago.

The online dating idea might work in principle, but POF has failed miserably in its execution.

POF's inoperative e-mail system, stagnant and repetitive forums, and the usual pool of dysfunctional and neurotic clientele are more hassle than they're worth.

Quite frankly, the odds of meeting that intriguing special someone at the grocery store, book store, or coffee shop are better than they are here.

I'm sticking around for a few more days because I recently sent out a few messages that haven't been read yet. Then I'm out of here.

Do USA have hooligans in the stands?
Posted: 12/2/2006 7:01:02 PM
There are a lot of hooligans in US sports. They don't riot like some of the soccer fans do, but there are plenty individual acts of "fans" throwing batteries, bottles, chunks of ice, etc. at the opposing teams and occasionally some fans will run out on the field and assault a referee.

Believe it or not, some of the worst examples here are found not in the pro sports at all, but in youth programs, when some of the parents get upset at the coaches or referees. Several school coaches have been shot and countless others have been assaulted.

Has This Happened to You?
Posted: 11/30/2006 5:10:49 PM
The other night, I sent out several notes trying to contact some local POF ladies.

When I finished typing my message, I clicked on the "send message" button (duh...I figured that part out all by myself) and "message sent" popped up on the screen.

When I checked my "sent messages" file, about one in three of the messages didn't appear, so I don't know whether those messages were actually sent. I tried sending follow-up messages to the ladies who's original message didn't show up in my "sent" file just to see whether they received the first message. When I sent the second message, they showed up in my "sent messages" file, but in keeping with standard POF rules of etiquette nobody has written back to tell me if the first messages were ever sent, or if they actually were sent but just didn't show up in my "sent messages" list.

I don't want to resend the missing messages if they are being delivered the first time. So my question is, has this happened to anybody else and, if so, were you able to ascertain whether the missing messages were sent but not logged, or WTF?

Note: The missing messages were NOT blocked, which happens if your vitals don't meet the message acceptance parameters set by each account user. By all indications except for their absence from the "message sent" log, including the confirmation "message sent" screen, they seem to have been sent.

But for those who do, one could argue that choosing to be alone on holidays is actually healthier than the alternative.

loneley at Christmas
Posted: 11/29/2006 11:02:24 PM
If it bothers you that much, why not volunteer to work at a soup kitchen or other place that feeds those worse off than you on Christmas?

If you're queasy about going to the seedier places, look around. In Denver, some pretty nice restaurants give free meals to the poor on Christmas and need volunteers to help keep the cost manageable, since most of their regular workers have the day off.

If that doesn't make you feel better about yourself and your condition, nothing will.

Can you tell by their voice?
Posted: 11/28/2006 7:39:22 PM
As someone else has pointed out, I am much more likely to judge someone based on their choice of words, grammar, modulation, etc., than on the length, thickness, and health of their vocal cords. Also keep in mind that there are medical conditions that can affect people's voices.

However, it seems to be a natural tendency for people to attempt to charater others by the sound of their voices. IMO, such simplistic attempts to characterize something as complex as a human being will prove to be false as often as they are correct. One of the clearest examples of this occurred at the end of the silent film era when two of the most popular silent film stars weren't able to make the transition to "talkies." Tom Mix, who was accepted by millions of fans as a rough-and-ready cowboy in silent films actually had a somewhat high-pitched voice and audiences just didn't accept him in his established role as a cowboy, gunfighter, lover, etc. when his voice was juxtaposed against that image.

And Clara Bow, "The It Girl" who was perceived as a sultry, sophisticated temptress in the 20s actually had a nasal, squeeky Bronx accent that came across as trashy and unsophisticated when sound came along.

My grandmother used to tell me about how movie audiences burst out laughing and hooting the first time they heard what their former "idols" actually sounded like.

Should liberal states tolerate, illiberal regimes?
Posted: 11/28/2006 7:14:43 PM

Absolutely, however the problem with this lies with those who would attempt to create a threat and make it SEEM real.

Exactly. That's all the more reason not to intervene. Throughout Humankind's history, those with the desire and military wherewithal to attack others have never found themselves at a loss for excuses to "justify" it.

Nuke plant info available to public
Posted: 11/28/2006 4:48:10 PM
I don't lose too much sleep over it.

Making a nuclear bomb isn't like baking chocolate chip cookies. Just because you have a recipe doesn't mean you can pull it off.

Look at it this way. Anybody who can figure out how to obtain the fissionable material, transport it, assemble it, hide it, and deliver it to its target without getting caught isn't going to have any trouble getting their hands on a blue print.

Not only that, even if they are able to do all of the above, they would have no way of knowing whether the bomb would actually WORK without testing one prior to delivery. There are thousands of technical problems that can cause the bomb to fail, some obvious, others not. Why do you think governments intentinoally blow up billions of dollars worth of A-bombs to test them? And even a terrorist group with enormous resources couldn't risk building and trying to deploy a multi-million dollar bomb that turns out to be a dud.

I'm not saying it's inconceivable that a terrorists group could build and detonate a nuclear weapon. I'm just saying that of all the obstacles they would have to overcome, getting the blue print is essentially trivial compared to all the others.
