No Grades in School!!??
Posted: 1/28/2009 10:37:09 AM
this doesn't surprise me one bit. The way our school system has been constantly trying to protect our kids from everything, things like this will happen even more. The nanny state has them, they are doomed. Zero tolerance, no tag at recess, no picking up snow off the ground because someone might throw a snow ball, no hugging, no nothing and now no hurt feelings. Give me a break. The future will be full of wimps who won't be prepared for criticism.

Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement

^^ You would think so but the record industry is pushing this so the government must have a hard on coz they wanna push this through behind our backs. Judging by the lack of responses here, people don't seem to care. Too busy crying over gas prices I guess. It's your freedom but hey, everyone has their interests

Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement
Posted: 6/2/2008 2:38:40 PM
Seems a leaked document has come online about a secret proposed agreement that would basically make anyone who has songs on their computer, ipod, cell phone or any other storage device a criminal. This is ridiculous to the max as it isn't illegal to download songs in Canada, but if this goes through, then it will be. It goes above and beyond our charter that guarantees us protection from illegal search and seizure.

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/news/story.html?id=642326df-30e7-4822-b919-1f6cd88b0c9d

The federal government is secretly negotiating an agreement to revamp international copyright laws, which could make the information on Canadian iPods, laptop computers or other personal electronic devices illegal and greatly increase the difficulty of travelling with such devices.

The deal could also impose strict regulations on Internet service providers, forcing those companies to hand over customer information without a court order.

Called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), the new plan would see Canada join other countries, including the United States and members of the European Union, to form an international coalition against copyright infringement.

The agreement is being structured much like the North American Free Trade Agreement except it will create rules and regulations regarding private copying and copyright laws.

Federal trade agreements do not require parliamentary approval.

The deal would create an international regulator that could turn border guards and other public security personnel into copyright police. The security officials would be charged with checking laptops, iPods and even cellular phones for content that "infringes" on copyright laws, such as ripped CDs and movies.

The guards would also be responsible for determining what is infringing content and what is not.

The agreement proposes any content that may have been copied from a DVD or digital video recorder would be open for scrutiny by officials -- even if the content was copied legally.

"If Hollywood could order intellectual property laws for Christmas what would they look like? This is pretty close," said David Fewer, staff counsel at the University of Ottawa's Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic. "The process on ACTA so far has been cloak and dagger. This certainly raises concerns."

The leaked ACTA document states officials should be given the "authority to take action against infringers (i.e., authority to act without complaint by rights holders)."

Anyone found with infringing content in their possession would be open to a fine. They may also have their device confiscated or destroyed, according to the four-page document.

The trade agreement includes "civil enforcement" measures, which give security personnel the "authority to order ex parte searches" (without a lawyer present) "and other preliminary measures."

In Canada, border guards already perform random searches of laptops at airports to check for child pornography. ACTA would expand the role of those guards.

On top of these enforcement efforts, ACTA proposes forcing Internet service providers to hand over personal information pertaining to "claimed infringement" or "alleged infringers" -- users who may be transmitting or sharing copyrighted content over the Internet.

The ACTA discussion paper was leaked online by Sunshine Media, the firm that runs the Wikileaks.org website -- a whistleblowing website created to help circulate secret documents.

It is expected the new agreement will be tabled at July's meeting of G-8 nations in Tokyo.

lightbulb that uses no electricity
Posted: 5/27/2008 9:07:14 AM

so you are suggesting that this old woman got up on her roof with a 3/4 inch drill made a bunch of holes, placed the bottless through the holes ( In her roof?? ) and then siliconed the hell out of the holes in the event of you know that weird thing that happens sometimes ( RAIN !!) . Yeah that seems likely ?

i don't believe i suggested that. Bleach and water does not produce electricity or light, if that were the case, swimming pools would be shining the night sky. Its basically a sun pipe, the bleach and water acts to reflect the sunlight down the bottle to light the room. When it gets dark, the bottles are just bottles filled with chlorine and water and they don't produce light.

it doesn't emit electricity, it only works when the sun is out. If you look in the video, the bottle is stuck partially through the roof. The sun shines through the bottle of bleach and water and the light is diffuses through the dark room.

Freud: Junk or Science?
Posted: 3/20/2008 10:03:23 PM

Because a psychologist doesn't have the authority to write presciptions for recognized mental illnesses , this makes them redundant in my opinion. A social worker would do just as well I would think.

redundant? Before the advent of psychotropic drugs, psychiatry was focused on psychotherapy, the same thing that many psychologists continue to do this day. Psychiatry branched away from the traditional roots and moved to drugs, whereas psychology has remained true, albeit branched into different areas. Drugs may help a person, but actually learning about why you feel the way you do and learning how to overcome the mental obstacles makes psychology superior in my opinion. If anything, psychiatry has become to Dependant on pills . A social worker isn't trained the same way a psychologist is, totally different fields.

when it comes to hpv, if you've had more than 3 partners, than you most likely already hpv, thing is, most people don't show symptoms like warts. But they still spread it and condoms aren't 100 percent effective in stopping hpv. But not using one would just be stupid. Safest sex is none at all

Being in the psych field
Posted: 3/3/2008 5:51:37 PM
its rather funny how some people who take courses, but do not become psychologists would "analyze" someone and then dump them for whatever reasons. II am not a psychologist, i am a psychology major and i hope to get my Phd someday and then become registered along the way. I don't "analyze" people, i do however offer insight, which is different. Besides, a person needs special training to become a psychoanalyst, not all psychologists psychoanalyze.

Freud was an unscientific bore...mostly wrong about everything and culturally far too narrow.

depends on which system you follow, I happen to find much of what he theorized to make sense, say for the whole oedipus/electra complex thing. I especially like his views on transformations of motives, repression, etc..

Being in the psych field
Posted: 3/2/2008 3:18:43 PM

i've noticed this trent with others i've known in mental health. they have plenty of information and know how to play the therapy game. but they can't indefinitely hide the fact that they studied psych in order to 'fix' themselves.

i will admit that is why i went into psychology, because of my past experiences. Although I didn't necessarily go into it to fix myself, more to better understand how the mind works and why i have experiences that i do. I really don't see anything wrong with that, plus i like to help others, high level of empathy on my part.

Depressing news: anti-depressants don't work.
Posted: 2/29/2008 7:30:48 AM
although i have posted many times on the subject of antidepressants and may seem anti-antidepressant, i can't take one study, a meta analysis at that, as a means to say that these pills don't work. One study and suddenly everyone is going to freak out and I imagine that some people will stop taking their meds only to end up going through some serious withdrawal. I know they worked for me, was it the pill or my faith in it, who knows. But the media is misleading in their reports as I've read many articles stating how they don't work, but when you read it, it states that they work for people with serious depression, so how can they not work, but work for those that are severely depressed? Umm, they aren't called anti-depressants for nothing. What is even more troubling is the choices, should a person not take anything, and go further into depression, take the drug, or if they can afford it, get some behavioral therapy? Well, i know i can't afford therapy so i chose the drug. Until something is done about the ridiculous prices therapists charge, people will choose the other 2 options. Therapy should be the first choice, but often times it isn't.

People experiencing grief or temporary sadness should not be put on them and the problem is that these pills are so easily prescribed for any number of reasons. I have dysthymia a sort of chronic, mild depression that seems to just take its toll on me. I've been off and on meds for years and being off them, I feel so empty and miserable that i have to go back on. So for me, they do work, and although i hate the side effects, they do help. So one study cannot disprove the benefits that i have had. I think more research is needed and people should take this study with a grain of salt as it seems rather suspicious

actually, theres lots of information online about rgp lenses. I know this because I have had to wear them. Why is lasik out of the question, do you have thin corneas? As far as brands, its subjective, Ive tried many different ones and to be honest, my eyes cannot tolerate hard lenses well anymore. It would help more if you could explain why you need them. It would help with which type and brand may be helpful.

antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health
Posted: 1/30/2008 10:56:05 PM
The signs of clinical depression are clearly different from "slight depression".

yes but general practitioners are not highly trained in treating depression or mental illness, and it seems in many instances, it is the GP who is prescribing the meds, not a psychiatrist. I've also found it difficult to stay off meds, I've been diagnosed as having dysthymia, and when the depression is gone, i no longer wish to be on them, but months later it returns. I believe that these meds alter your neurotransmitters and receptors to the point that they cannot function properly, so one is forced to stay on them. I dunno if there is any hardcore evidence to support that claim as its my own experiences that I base it on. I just don't wish to stay on meds my whole life as it can't be safe, just as antipsychotics can cause tardive dyskinesia with prolonged use, and a host of other problems.

why do women today complain so much lol. 100 years ago, I don't think people complained about that situation, the feminist movement and society has it instilled in people's heads that sex is supposed to last a certain amount of time, it isn't a sport lol. FREE Federalized Health Care
Posted: 12/21/2007 3:33:16 PM
ah, niceguy yet again spouting off about the benefits of universal healthcare, this guy is so blind, perhaps he should go in for some lasik and pay some cash for it. Talk to me about how great it is when they decide to pay for my eye surgery pal, unless you wanna give me the $7,000 it costs that OHIP doesn't want to cover. But hey its ok, I'll end up losing my vision and have to fight to go on disability and I'll enjoy doing nothing while you pay for me to do nothing.

You annoy the hell out of me with this crusade that you have going on, I hope you end up being in a position where you get sick and get told, oh, we don't cover that, or that you have to live the reality of waiting long, you think waiting 109 days for a hip replacement is somehow not long, are you stupid? 109 days for a person to be in pain perhaps and not being able to walk, tell them it isn't long. Wake the hell up and take the blinders off, universal health care sucks, so does the crap they have in the States, especially seeing on the news how a 17 year old girl died because her health insurance wouldn't cover the liver transplant she needed, saying it was experimental, finally they agreed to cover it but she dies like the same day.

I'm all for universal health care but when they decide to not cover something and let people die, or go blind or whatever, what the hell is so great about that eh?

A canadian has health insurance from before they are born till they die and canadian do NOT go bankrupt from medical bills.

no they just die because they can't afford treatment

The American health care system in the USA is a mess

and it isn't in Canada, again, you're nuts

You have a FREE eye exam every 2 years in Ontario

how generous, I get 1 free every year coz I have an eye disease, again, how generous

They pay for lazer eye surger if it's to correct injuries or diseases conditions. I should know, my mother got it free of charge.

Expecting them to pay for it so you dont' have to wear glasses is like expecting them to pay for your girlfriends boob job.

No, if you look on OHIP website, they tell you what eye surgeries are paid for and I only came across one that was covered by it, and it wasn't lasik. What I have does not require a lasik surgery, and I do have corneal disease. I don't need the surgery so as not to ever have to wear glasses, I need it so i can see with glasses.

Right to work Vs. Unions
Posted: 12/19/2007 9:04:50 AM
I'm sorry but come on, there is no way in hell those grievances went through, there can't be, it;s laughable. In your own office, you can move your plants and trash can. I've worked many union jobs and no where in any contract does it stipulate that you can't move a damn plant in your office, if you put it there, you put it where you want., thats ridiculous. No one said stewards don't file frivolous grievances, it happens a lot, but they don't go through. As far as moving furniture, that is a union job, but furniture does not equate to a plant.

In your case you may not be jealous, not everyone can negotiate their own wages and benefits, and earn six figures, obviously you work in a field that isn't traditionally associated with unions anyways. People that work assembly lines or are electricians etc, are a different breed, and I'm sorry, but people who sit in an office and have never worked a line don't have a clue, not saying that you haven't, but many have and that is what I am talking about.

Edit, if it is your clock, then you can change it all you want.

Accutane
Posted: 12/19/2007 8:51:52 AM

I have the paperwork, and the pills here. When you were taking it, what were your side effects like?

Well, i still require the use of chap stick due to dry lips, i haven't been on it since 1993. I dunno if it was because of accutane but i got really depressed and suicidal, again, after taking it, i haven't been the same since. I developed Irritable bowel syndrome years later, my eyes now have a cornea thinning disease to which there is no cure. Accutane dries out your skin and i have read that it affects your collagen to, which is what the corneas are made of, and many people have developed floaters in their eyes after taking it, which I have as well, floaters are bits of collagen floating around in the fluid in your eyes, which are quite annoying coz you can see them when you look at stuff. Also have joint problems.

Not to say any of that will happen to you, or if any or all are caused by it, but if you look on the net, you will find many people who have suffered because of this pill. I wished I hadn't taken it, i'd rather have acne than what i have now.

your trashcan story seems a lil extreme, I'm guessing that the union would not file a grievance if you moved it, however, if you were changing the trash bag every day then yes they would, because custodial was probably a union job where you worked and you would be doing their job.

Unions aren't perfect but they are a lot better than none at all in SOME places, if someone enjoys making minimum wage and are happy, thats fine, others want better pay and better working environment. The people that whine about unions tend to be uneducated to what goes on, I see it all the time in the editorials in the paper. People blame unions for companies skipping town. Oh, where do they go, Mexico, China? How well are those people paid, how well do the companies treat them? It's the union people that shop in your stores and keep the economy going, even with nice wages, some people still can't live a decent life, but we're out there putting money into things that the minimum wage people can't afford to do.

I think a lot of it is jealousy to be honest.

Planet in Peril
Posted: 10/23/2007 8:23:55 PM
I watched the first half of the 4 hour documentary tonight. It was saddening to see how countries allow people to get away with animal poaching and illegal trade and the laws are just to weak to deal with them. It also furthered my disgust at China in general. Before people jump on me for saying that, I think it is deserving. Point out the wrongs with Canada as well, I don't mind coz hopefully the seal hunt thread will be reopened this year so I can make posts in there again I know my country or other country's aren't that great either but that country is hosting the Olympics next year and they aren't exactly a model of excellence. To see thousands of turtles strewn about in a pen like that was sad. They don't treat animals with respect at all. This world sickens me and it makes me ashamed to be a human. Truly sad state the world is in.

Well considering that octane boosters are used to reduce engine knock, anyone who thinks that it will improve power should do some reading. I'd say that its a case of false advertising.

new speeding penalties good or bad?

Just so people know, there already are speed limiters on cars built in by the manufacturers

what? I think you're mistaken, unless you mean the speed is limited at 200 km/h, yeah, really limited.

I don't think this law will change anything really, as seen last week with the death of those two women. They could reinstate the death penalty and yet people will still speed. Deterrents don't work, human nature is human nature, and unfortunately, some humans are idiots. The only solution is to put speed limiters on vehicles, but some will say that even that isn't safe, but it will keep people from speeding on highways. I don't understand why they don't, and since they don't, it adds up to a cash grab plain and simple. Changing behavior is not about taking cars away or paying fines, yet the OPP think that this new law will change behaviors, it's laughable. I'm sorry for those that have lost loved ones, but this isn't the way to go about changing that.

I know this is from 2004, but the incidents showing up in the news seem to be on the rise. Unfortunately when these things happen, the cause of death is not blamed on the taser, rather hey call it excited delirium. Well, I imagine getting shocked like that will cause something to get excited, so in reality, the coroners and such are basically defending the use of these tings and thats wrong. It's a shame that this stuff happens, and it will continue to happen more and more.

It's always class warfare. Blame the rich, soak the rich, tax the rich. THAT will make it all better in the "worker's paradise"

Why the hell not? Why does the lowerclass have to suffer huh? What. because someone happens to have lots of money, they have a right to tax cuts etc? Tax the people that can take the hits, not those that can barely get by.

Talk is cheap. The salaries of the executives are approved by the board. If stockholders have a problem with the executive salaries, they should say so to the board. Otherwise, it is a private company, and they (the company) have the right to pay what they want to pay, and you have the right to not work there.

Talk is apparently expensive, coz those people at GM haven't really turned it around, they still lose money, yet pay millions to their exectutives. I didn't know losing money was rewarded with getting paid millions, especially in a company that continues to lose money. Here's a thought, use that money for other things instead of paying these idiots the big bucks, rather than passing the buck and blaming it on the union workers.

I don't see anyone complaining about the billions the founders of places like Google and Yahoo made

I don't care, ,unless they are paying their workers minimum wage, then I have a problem with that, just like i have a problem with any big company paying meager wages.

I have a sneaking suspicion that folks like you think that the government should step in, control and limit salaries, and basically tell private companies how to run their business. History has shown that it always works pretty well, right? Right? (/sarcasm)

I dont think the government should step in, so your sneaking suspicions are wrong. What i want to see is people stop bashing the unions for every problem that companies face, when perhaps the companies should look at how they pay their own people in management etc. I don't see what is so wrong about people organizing to demand decent and fair wages, wages that many people still can't get by with. GM and the likes don't make cars that people want to buy, and or they can't afford to buy them so they buy foreign. This is why they are losing money, not because of the union wages and benefits. If they actually listened to what people want to buy, maybe they'll turn around, until then, they will still lose money.
