Nowhere else to put this - could do with some advice
Posted: 7/16/2011 3:18:45 PM
If an old lady may say a few words, I would like to put my 2 cents in.
You do not have to do anything other than to stop trying to figure this out.
You can read up on the effects of alcohol, maybe, so that you can remind yourself of all the downsides of being around people (including yourself) who drink too much.
There is no rationalizing with a drunk. Inhibitions are down, faulty decisions are made.
There is no resolution. Friend 3 is correct, just let it go.
In the future, please remember that if you feel uncomfortable and want to leave a party or a bar or a date you should do so. No explanations are necessary. Trust your gut. Even better, if you are having a "bad day" don't go out to any place that you are not really familiar with and only with true friends.
Good luck.

Are jewish settlers the new terrorists?
Posted: 11/7/2010 11:54:58 AM
Guess my definition differs from your, S.
If it strikes terror in the hearts and minds of people then it is terrorism to me.
When a man acts in a way that makes his wife believe she will be maimed or killed that is terrorism.
When a man stands on his porch and shoots people who he believes are thieves because they have dark skin and he doesn't know them that is terrorism.
You are absolutely correct that these days the majority automatically go to political motivation when the word terrorism is used.
When people use religion as an excuse for harmful actions that is terrorism as well.
They do not admit that politics or greed are at the base of their actions and who am I to argue?

People in Texas can shoot people walking through their yards and not be arrested. Would we consider them terrorists?
Honestly, I do. Most don't agree with me, however, even folks who call themselves liberal think it is just great to shoot first and ask questions later if you feel threatened.

Bean Stew
Posted: 11/6/2010 1:30:23 PM
Once upon a time there was a fantastic multi bean stew posted.
I have managed to lose the recipe. I know, I know ... how could that happen with a computer at my fingertips?
Anyway, 'tis the season and I want to make it again.
It was a crock pot recipe, crushed tomatoes or diced, it had bacon in it.
If anyone has it could you repost it?
Another delicious recipe would do.
Thanks in advance. jel

Is it OK to compare someone to Hitler?
Posted: 11/6/2010 1:08:00 PM
[yea I think he may have learned it from the democrats ...I cant even comprehend how many times in 2008 I heard the phrase IMPEACH BUSH ...heck I even heard the phrase KILL BUSH ...don't think I have heard that one on the current guy yet ]

Here's hoping I remembered how to do that C and P thing.
The difference between hearing about impeaching former President Bush in 2008 and the talk of impeaching President Obama now is that many of us believe that the former has committed impeachable offenses.
What has the current President done that warrants impeachment?

one in every crowd ~ how do you deal with them?
Posted: 3/28/2010 5:15:19 PM
Why not suggest using an object to indicate that someone has the floor.
A tangible indicator means that someone/anyone/ everyone would and should call out any bad behavior.
Other than that, this person may have good info, but, no thought is original.
If he/she leaves someone else will have the opportunity to speak up and share.
So far as hurting someone... of this person is over the age of 15 there is an awareness of this behavior. It may be very difficult for him or her to control. It may be greater due to passion and excitement. It is a kindness to bring it up privately.
I know because the person you describe could be me.

How Does God Decide who to Help?
Posted: 3/28/2010 5:06:33 AM
I do pray. It is never about a need that I have.
I was taught that God helps those who help themselves.
I have no idea if that is true.
My prayers are generally to thank God for those benefits I find in life each day.

Health Care Bill to Force me to buy into Corporate Health Care
Posted: 3/27/2010 7:37:39 AM

After Obama signed the bill 13 states filed law suites calling the mandate to buy into the corporate health care system as being unconstitutional. I dont know if it is unconstitutional or not, but I agree that it is wrong to force anyone into buying into a very corrupt and profit-motivated corporate health care system. Instead of maing me buy into the corupt Health Care System, why not make the Health Care companies themselves pay for health care

Could you explain in a little more detail what you mean by that question?
I cannot tell if you mean the pharmaceutical companies, the facilities that administer health care, some combination of all of them...
While I agree that more regulation and more strength to implement fines and punishments against negligent corporations are necessary components of gov't oversight I am not sure what that has to do with "health care" reform.
Do you think that auto companies should provide us with vehicles to drive?
that private schools should pay our children to attend?
that retailers should pay for us to take their merchandise?

Last but not least... do you really think that you should avoid personal responsibility so that I and my family should underwrite your accidents and illnesses?
If this is so I happily welcome you to the family of socialists.

Health Care Bill to Force me to buy into Corporate Health Care
Posted: 3/27/2010 3:31:59 AM

The analogy, I'm afraid, does not follow. If you don't own property, you don't have to pay tax on it.

I always love this line.
As a lifelong renter it makes me wonder... if I was not paying my landlord's property taxes who was?
Did she and he do it out of the kindness of their hearts?
Did they project all of their expenses and then subtract the cost of property taxes before determining what amount they should ask for?
C'mon now, unless you live in your car or under a bridge you paying property taxes.
If you shop you are paying the property taxes of the business you frequent (and the health care of their employees).

Why is this even in the constitution.......
Posted: 3/14/2010 4:27:25 PM

the Beauty of the US Constitution is that the Framers allowed for the Constitution to be change whenever the People felt a need.

Another precept that most amercan fail to realize is that no Law is set in stone...The Constitution can be amended to reflet the sentitments of the People.

Luckily, it is a monumental task to make those changes.
Ratification takes massive amounts of energy and many challenges.

Collective Punishment Over Same-Sex Prom Date
Posted: 3/14/2010 3:39:14 PM

They should keep same sex stuff out of all schools until college or univ. Its just not right for young minds to see that sick stuff

You have a right to your opinion, of course.
Me, I think, that the adults who read this forum should not have to see this sick stuff.
Those "young minds" are hanging out with other kids who are sexting, who are performing fellatio on the school bus, who are getting high on the corner.
Seeing two young women attend a dance and parties, one of them in a fancy jacket and pants instead of a tshirt and jeans, is the least of what kids are exposed to today.
This would include the ugly bigotry shown in expressions such as I just responded to.

That is certainly a lesson of life that we all learn eventually.
Can you tell us what rule she broke?
Why it was necessary to cancel the prom?
One does not actually break a rule until the action is taken.
So, in deciding to make everyone in the facility "pay" because this person said they will wear a tux this school district probably broke a few rules. The taxpayers will pay for that.

Why are so many unemployeed
Posted: 3/14/2010 9:13:03 AM

Isn't it the case that the employer pays into unemployment, not the employee? I don't know. Could be wrong

Which means that we all pay for it, that is how employers stay in business. comsumers/citizens/taxpayers/people pay for it.
So whether we pay from our paychecks or throught payroll taxes or donations thrown into a can on a counter. If it is in the US people in the US pay for it.
Good Lord, stop worrying about someone who is out of work who has to pay taxes on some paltry sum they get to tide them over until another workplace can put them back to work and worry about improving your own (generally speaking)status.
Just maybe if folks work hard enough to gain some financial stability they can stop worrying about someone else getting something they don't have to take advantage of.
I would think people would be happy to be able to avoid the depressing, demeaning act of having to justify being out of work for an extended period and just live.

Part of the reason for "illegal" in this thread may be that nobody really knows the immigration status of those who utilize medical services through EDs in a hospital setting.
Just because someone has a slightly darker complexion than those of use who have an Anglo-Saxon background and does not have English as their first language does not automatically give them undocumented status.
I am curious as to what reliable form of birth control anyone without medical coverage is supposed to utilize.
If you know of something affordable, please, let us all know.

Perhaps, it is just in Massachusetts, but, the only reason I ever heard of a volunteer being turned down was that they could not get past the criminal check.
All these suggestions of unemployed folks working in human service positions are truly hilarious.
First of all, you have to have the proper temperment to work with folks with needs.
I have to tell you I would not be happy about half the people who post on these forums within three blocks of my grandchildren in a caregiving position.
Second, all this would do would be to put other people out of work.

Would the world rush to our aid?
Posted: 2/28/2010 3:50:04 AM

I knew that would happen. Every time there is a crisis in another country the US has to run over there with our tax $$.

No other countries would not help us! No wonder we're in a deficit.

Our newly elected Illinois Governor wants a mega tax hike. I knew that would happen as he was already doing that. People were dumb enough to vote him in, guess they love the abuse.

Every time something happens we get a tax hike. All we're doing is feeding the political pigs at the Government trough

I love how folks do not pay att'n to reality.
Most of us pay so little in taxes it does not make a dent in what is needed in this nation, never mind for foreign aid.
Do you really not know that state tax money has nothing to do with federal activity?

Why do employers ask this?
Posted: 2/22/2010 8:06:42 AM
I don't know about the area you live in, my state requires that a child not be left alone until they are 11 or 12.
I note that you blew off the question about how long it has been since you dealt with a child care setting after scoffing at the info that they require that children stay of if they are ill.
Your preconcieved notions concerning how people who lack an education and/or skills skew your perceptions.
Repeating the same ol' silliness about playing the system still doesn't make the life of (mainly) mothers any less likely to have childhood illness in it.

Sorry about missing the "next one" reference as being the one year old.
It makes no sense ... "get the next one in..."?

I am guessing that you mean school, the school years do not stop the need for parents to care for their children.
Anyway, it is pretty obvious that you filter out any info that doesn't fit into your bias.
Care to revisit your claim that FMLA helps a parent with a sick child?
That centers do not prohibit attendence for sick children?

One final clarification. I first posted that it CAN take ten years or so, not must.

I didn't ask the Afghans, not concerned with what they say...I asked soldiers I am with and not a one cared. And fine, remove the Bible reference. Then what about all the soldiers and Marines that have Christian tattoos? Isn't that along the same lines? Should they all get sent home? We have Chaplains everywhere...most are Christian. Same thing.

I am hoping that this is a fraud, not the military personnel we are sending over there to work with and train Afghan police and troops.
If this is honestly a military vet he should know that regardless of denomination chaplains are meant to work with all religions in addition to bringing comfort to those who do not believe in a supreme being.
The tattoo babble is just foolish.

Oh this should be good...

LOL, as I said. some just love hatin' on single women who need assistance,
enough so they miss that there was not just a 5 yo in the scenario but a 1 yo as well.
How long has it been since you dealt with a child care situation?

I ran a child care setting for 5 years, kids did not come in when they were sick. If the parents were lucky they had the back up they were supposed to have for emergencies.
If not, they got to take the day off.
I don't know where you work, but, there are plenty of of employers who do not offer holidays, who do not pay for sick days, who give minimal vacation time.
FMLA is for serious illnesses, a person must be out for more than three days, or have an appt. with a physician and a prescription, or third, two appts with a doc.
When those criteria are met with an employer who has more than 75 employees FMLA is of use, otherwise no go.

I am not sure what people cannot understand about women going to work, being terminated for absence, getting another job being out again. It is the real world for many people.
Just to clarify, I was one of the lucky ones, I had back up, I was able to work a full time job and two PTs when it was necessary.
Why do people always respond like the info is personal?
I am not likely to share personal info with judgmental folks.

Posted: 2/21/2010 11:50:16 AM

You're pretty off the mark here, friend. Do you honestly believe that our military is not bound by our Constitution when it is operating outside of our physical border?

I am no expert, but, my belief is that military personnel give up lots of their constitutional rights for the pleasure of serving for us.
That would include restrictions on drinking in Islamic nations, the right to expression, the right to leave their job when their contract is up. I believe it includes some curtailment of search and seizure protections...
Certainly, the military does not extend Constitutional rights to those they capture.
Some seem to have no rights at all, some have rights under international agreements the Constitution has nothing to with it.
We are currently in Iraq to some extent at the pleasure of the Iraqi gov't.

So, the short answer would be NO. I do not believe that our military is bound by the US Constitution for many reasons.

I am not sure why you don't think that "serving as an apologist ..." sounds like the person who posted it, his history sounds like it is exactly the position he would put forward.

So does serving as an apologist for Islamic jihadists by running down this country's efforts to destroy them.

Is this supposed to be a distraction from the actual point concerning what is inappropriate?
Regardless of the US constitution which has no validity in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Yemen... to go to any of these nations while claiming that our mission is about freedom and not religion only to have religious writings on equipment is self defeating while the claim is that we are trying to assist in development of an Islamic nation.
To write about a majority in the nation of origin is ludicrous when the item is utilized in a different region, isn't it?
Even the company management sees that it is not good for our troops to carry this tool.

Don’t employers have to help pay for an ex-employee’s unemployment benefits? Maybe they’re trying to weed out people who are more inclined to file for benefits due to previous familiarity with the system.

If there is just cause for termination the employer would claim that the person (parent) not really being able to work. This would negate any unemployment claim. One must be willing to work.
The help that employers pay is in the form of insurance payments based on size of staff and frequency of layoffs. Perhaps some other criteria as well.

We all know no such thing.
While, I have no doubt that it happens, there are lowlifes everywhere, I am guessing that you don't know a thing about the circumstances of these women.
Do you even know they are welfare recipients?
They could be widows with great inheritances.

Another reason it is beneficial for businesses to ask this question is that it gets around the prohibition of focus on parenthood.
Can't ask if a woman has children and what she will do if they get sick?
Ask if she is on welfare.
It has been decades since my state has provided anything but an emergency payment for people who do not have children.

I know some of you just love "hatin' on" women who collect welfare for years, but, you really need to look at a realistic scenario.
Many employers do not give adequate sick time, if any at all.
A woman with young children will need time off as most child care centers require absence, and schools encourage it.
This creates terminations on an ongoing basis.
If a woman is single/divorced when she has children aged 5 and 1, this can take ten years or so to resolve.

Most workplaces have harassment policies.
Keep your mouth closed, let HR work on their investigation.
When they hand down a decision, put it behind you and let it go.
Do NOT discuss this issue with anyone at work. Do NOT try to do your own investigation. Do NOT try to get your friends to find out what is going on or to write reports.
And, please, stop calling women in your workplace girls.
Everyone has too much work these days. Corps are pushing the limits in finding out how much they can get workers to do.

Isn't it reasonable to add in health insurance premiums when comparing US taxation with other countries?

No, because not everyone needs health insurance, just as not everyone needs auto, life, or fire insurance. I myself have no life insurance, because I do not have any dependents. I would not add life insurance premiums to the U.S. taxation rate.

Also, you forget that the U.S. has Medicaid, and some state governments offer more benefits beyond Medicaid.

I guess it depends on where you live but in the 40 years or so that I have worked, I have never had to produce a doctor's note for absences of a day or two. I am aware of some patients/employees who are habitually absent from work and in situations such as those, employers have asked for a doctor's note. These scenarios leads right back the the patient/employee and their abuses of the health care system.

If only... we just cannot generalize about these situations.
My employer, a gov't entity, will "counsel" an employee for being out six days in a year. Included in that session is a notice that in the future if you call in sick you MAY be asked for medical documentation.
Any sensible employee will do the CYA thing and pay $15-$20. for a doctor's note rather than risk a day or several days' pay, right?
While I understand that six days per year may seem excessive to some, if a single parent has two young children the likelihood is they will be used quickly.
The employer spells out in the documentation request that the doc must have SEEN the person not just have been consulted.
Is there some sick time abuse, sure. Not after that employee has been docked and shoved through the disciplinary system.

I am not the naive one if around here if anyone thinks that huge corporations are going to stop trying to influence votes because one issue goes against them.

Take a look at the sites that list donations.
The only differences are the percentages.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?
Posted: 2/11/2010 11:27:01 AM

I can't even order a freaking hamburger at most fast food joints without some clerk having a bad attitude. But people complain about cops having a bad attitude, that's hilarious.

Each of us should avoid contact with fast food workers in their workplaces as vigorously as we avoid police officers in their line of duty.

dont forget, get your tubes tied. It is a third version of responsibility.

I know this will come as a big surprise. Even this is not 100% reliable.

No charges in New Orleans probe of post-Katrina bridge blockade
Posted: 2/10/2010 2:00:44 PM
Sorry, Facebook friends... somehow most of the people I have spent any time with online are all ultra-conservative finger pointers who like to pretend that they have never had any lucky breaks or any help from the gov't despite collecting disability.
Ah well, good for a laugh, yes.

Pardon my ignorance, but, isn't the Army Corps of Engineers us?
My understanding is that the blessed USSC in a session or two prior to assuring corporations the right to free speech let the corporations that do homeowners' insurance in the Mississippi Delta area a pass on paying out for damages due to Katrina even if the facts were borne out that the damage was really due to some other cause; that being the breakdown of the levees.
I may not have the reasons straight, I just remember being appalled.

I think it is the job of the National Guard to do pretty much whatever they are told, and if the ARMY Corps caused the problem can't the ARMY National Guard help to fix it?
Dunno, just asking.

I am either way too tired or much too naive to understand what vested interest would our elected officials have in true reform?

and no worries about the gent thing, I figured out long ago that is simply a disguise.

How Do You Respond to Police - Legally?
Posted: 2/10/2010 1:14:21 PM

Their questions are not harming me in any way other than taking a bit of my time.

Just playing devil's advocate here, I have always been lucky enough in this lifetime to be able to look at cop's as my friends and able to teach my nice pale skinned babies that cops were folks to look to for help.
However, thinking that all that is being done is wasting a bit of time is not literally true.
Each person who doesn't at least ask why did you stop me, is there something I can help you with? aids in the development of the idea that the uniform means more power than it should.
I am not saying have an attitude, the opposite is the best route to follow, there is no reason though not to politely remind that officer who stops you to ask questions that he/she should have a reason.
If they are looking for someone who has just committed a crime a citizen should be made aware of that fact; especially if they are on foot. Just a thought.

BTW, for those who don't know, Medicare is for the aged and infirm, funded by the US govt, ostensibly paid for by payroll deductions.

Now this I can agree with. For me, the problem is that so many seem to forget that we are the government, the government is us.
Old fashioned, I suppose, literal yes... I bought that hook, line, and sinker tho.
"We the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice... "
Having justice means among other things providing as a group for equity in access to certain of life's necessities.

Is not Medicaid age dependent?

Well no, Michael, Medicaid is not age dependent. Medicare is for seniors and people who are identified as having handicaps as it stands right now.

That is why it would make sense to expand it, the administration fees are minimal, it is non-profit, well run, could flex with the stretch...
