Abs with free weights?
Posted: 12/1/2012 5:57:43 PM

I will not dispute your claim as it is true to a degree, much in the same way that removing the antenna from your car will improve your gas mileage as the Δ between the two in very small and pretty much insignificant.

So it is less about how much you eat and more about what you eat, as a calorie is not a calorie is not a calorie.

Oh, I see you were trying to burn me. Pretty ignorant of you considering what I wrote in the first sentence of that post. You are trying to imply that I said that weightlifting will make you not fat. That is not what I said. Diet will make the biggest difference - and weightlifting will help, too. That was my point, and exactly what I said.

Abs with free weights?

So muscle is created by burning fat?

I've read some of your posts, and you seem otherwise intelligent, so I'll be nice and assume this is a valid question and not a sarcastic attempt to burn me by utterly misinterpreting my post. Burning fat does not create muscle, although it will help show off what you have. Creating muscle, however, will help to burn fat by raising your metabolism. Hope this helps. :)

The Beatles remastered on vinyl (stereo)
Posted: 11/29/2012 3:48:35 PM

most audiophiles, engineers and DJ's would disagree with that, its all about analog bandwidth.....

That's not really true. Many audiophiles are down with digital. Almost all the recordings you hear now are digital. Only hard-core analog-o-philes actually think that vinyl sounds better. The analog bandwidth thing is a red-herring, most people can't even hear 20-20k, much less anything above or below that. And I will trade that bandwidth for the clarity and lack of noise any time.

hey guys how important is overall compatibility?

Overall compatibility is really only important if you are both seeking long term commitment. Short term dating will work fine on hormones alone. :P

sciatica

I have had sciatica, very painful. Pilates has worked wonders with me reducing the pain. But this is a long-term, lifestyle change I'm talking about. When I stop doing pilates, it comes right back.

I need some advice on a safe workout.
Posted: 11/28/2012 5:55:55 PM
Look into yoga or pilates. Long term back injuries are self-fulfilling in the sense that one starts to overcompensate for the injury, straining other parts of the body, which ends up straining the back, etc - kind of like a runaway greenhouse effect, but more painful, LOL. Work your core, which will strengthen your back, which will strengthen your core, etc.
When your core is right, then you can move into weights.

Sunrize and Casey are right on in that diet will play a bigger role in fat reduction for you if you are limited in what you can do with weights. You cannot spot-remove fat, it doesn't work that way. Any sensible compound movement weight training program will help to burn fat by creating muscle, so things like bench press, military press, standing curls, deadlifts, etc, will work, although you need to start very light and work with good form so not to aggravate your back condition. Get with a personal trainer to see what will work best with you.

The Beatles remastered on vinyl (stereo)
Posted: 11/28/2012 5:40:02 PM
Copernicus, IMHO, it's not so much that Beatles detractors are maligned because they don't like the Beatles - everyone is entitled to their opinion. But many Beatles detractors also want to minimize the impact that the Beatles had on music. Even if one doesn't like them (I am a fan), one has to recognize their stature and influence. Those people are maligned fairly. ;)

As far as vinyl - why the heck does anyone listen to vinyl anymore? I'm sorry, but well mastered CD's destroy vinyl in every listening aspect. Join the 20th century, folks. :)

Creationism in schools
Posted: 10/28/2012 12:02:09 PM
Creationism and ID are products of religious minds with an agenda of minimizing actual science. They are feel-good balms that people try to apply to reduce the fear and uncertainty that exists in life, and to a degree, in science as well. They do not belong in school, especially not in any science class. To say that it should be taught so that kids know the controversy is absurd, as if the kids should learn about storks bringing babies or the tooth fairy as well.

I (and most science minded people) personally find that the unknown is interesting, but many find it terrifying. I checked out the MrSolarWind channel, and watched the one about the most important image from the Hubble telescope. It was fascinating to me, but I imagine that it would be scary for religious minded people - the last thing most of them want to think about is how small and insignificant they are. :/

What do men think of a man like this

OP, yeah....... unrealistic if you want to actually find a guy. You will have to be willing to compromise on the calling/texting first at a minimum. I personally would not bother trying to date any woman with that many expectations.

anyone play electronic drum kits?
Posted: 9/14/2012 4:53:41 PM
Yeah, the high end kits like the upper Roland V-drums are very nice, somewhat comparable to an acoustic kit, but the lower price models (say, >$1500) are not going to scratch that itch the same way. E-kits are nice in the sense that you can control the volume to a degree, and you don't have to worry about tuning them! I stick with my acoustic Mapex set, though.

I found love once on here, but the problem (especially at my age, sadly), is the baggage people carry from their past relationships. People have to be able to let go of the hurt from the past. Don't blame the person in front of you for the sins of those in the past.

You represent the company as one of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world, and this should be exemplified by taking on a different opponent on short notice when extemporaneous circumstances come in to play.

Right, exactly. It appears weak and non-sensical, especially in light of the fact that Chael Sonnen is basically Dan Henderson minus the KO power. Jones' worries of a "different" opponent seem preposterous to me. Sonnen is stylistically almost identical to Dan, and about the same size. WTF.

I am certain that Jones would smash Sonnen, and he will likely smash Belfort, too. Despite Belfort's power, we know Jones has a good chin from Machida.

Sonnen would have been a good draw. He still had a lot of name power, even after Silva beat him the second time. I am a Jones fan, but that was a d1ck move, IMHO. Think of all the other fighters on that card that won't get paid now. Was he really worried that Sonnen could beat him?

why stand up? The last i checked MMA starts standing up not on the ground.. If a boxer connects one time with 40z gloves on that's lights out!

MMA fights only start standing by convention - There have been numerous fighters that would drop right to the ground, to force the fight there - Leites, Aoki,

I'm not saying this is the manliest way to fight, but it will give a boxer hell, and if their dumb enough to try to stand over top and punch down......

Boxer, I'm speechless. You are clearly not even reading what I write. I didn't say that I thought Mercer was prime - I was agreeing with *you*, for pete's sake. I was saying that Sylvia wasn't prime, either - the guy was WAY fat and out of shape. And you'd have to see Palhares or Aldo (or Bas Rutten, for a bigger guy with leg kicks) fight to know what I'm talking about. But kicks and distance is *my* point - how is Chavez going to close that gap when he gets leg kicked into oblivion, before he can unload a liver punch or whatever? All one of those guys would have to do is *fake* a low kick, and either shoot it high and hit them in the head, or shoot for a takedown.

Bas did indeed have good body strikes, and hey......have you checked out his leg kicks yet? ;)

And here is Palhares. Skip to the 2:00 mark to see why no boxer could stop him:

AKATD - It's actually not that hard to get close enough to do a takedown on a boxer at all - other boxers do it all the time, for pete's sake. You're assuming that each and every shot that a boxer throws will KO a MMA fighter? Come on now. All a MMA guy has to do is get close enough to lay hands on the boxer, and down they go. All over from there. As far as punches being fastest, I would say yes - at punching range. But when you add kicks to the equation, then what? Someone like Jose Also can administer vicious leg kicks at lightning speed. Are boxers used to defending those (hint: don't put your hands down to block)? But oddly enough, I do agree with you that most MMA guys would be beaten by decent boxers - AT BOXING. Turn it around, and......well, you get the idea.

Boxer - yeah, you have a point with Mercer and Sylvia, although Grandpa Mercer wasn't exactly fighting a prime Tim Sylvia, either. He was WAY out of shape (310lb fat). That result was disappointing, but not completely unexpected. Anyone can get KO'd in either boxing or MMA. But here's the thing - let's have a rematch and see if that happens again. Maybe it does......maybe not. And I forgot about Dana stopping Anderson Silva from fight Roy Jones jr. But I don't think that has ever been the question. Most MMA fans are aware that specialists will beat MMA guys in that specialty ie; boxers will beat MMA guys *at boxing*, judo guys will beat MMA guys *at judo*, etc. The question always seems to be from the specialists to the MMA guys that the specialists are so good that they will beat the MMA guys *at MMA*, and that is just as unlikely, hence my statements earlier. Sure, Roy Jones would whup Anderson Silva at boxing - just as Silva would DESTROY Jones in a MMA fight. Do you really disagree with that?

And while Duane and I don't always see eye-to-eye on things MMA, he is spot on with his comment. A leg-lock specialist like Palhares would own just about any boxer, at any weight - because boxers, in particular, would have no clue how to stop him. Hell, most fighters in the UFC can't stop him, LOL.

Hope this clears things up.
